Why can’t we just celebrate the games? Great competition among all nations. It’s clear that the USA won the most medals but why does it have to be about that? I just really enjoy the incredible competition.

"Astylos of Croton in southern Italy won a total of six victory olive wreaths in three Olympiads (488-480 B.C.) in the stade and the diaulos (twice the stade) events. In the first Olympiad, he ran for Croton and his compatriots honoured and glorified him. In the two successive Olympiads, however, he took part as a citizen of Syracuse. The people of Croton punished him by demolishing his statue in their city and converting his house into a prison."

I agree that you take a gold medal anytime they offer you one. The Kiwi high jumper wanted to share gold, so it was all up to the Bama kid. He chose poorly.

Not accepting the gold is like winning the lottery and going to a casino and throwing all that money on a spin of the roulette wheel. He lost a lot of money in endorsements because of that decision.
Bad choice.

This is a very physical event, throwing your body over a bar ~ 8 feet high. I think they had already jumped 12 times each. Very little chance each of them were at their peak after missing 3 times in a row.

Olympic Gold Medalist.

It will last for eternity, and you never have to apologize for it.

Silver Medalist’s 15 minutes of fame will last for a few weeks.

Blaming Shelby for not taking a tie????!?!?! You must gonna be that parent who complains about your kid not getting a ribbon for placing last. You go to the games to win. Tie is bull crap.

They tied regardless. They both achieved exactly the same highest jump.

There shouldn’t even be a “jump off”. Either one of them jumps higher or he doesn’t.

What’s the prize for this? T shirts?

No reason to be nihilistic about it. Outside of the athletes themselves, most people are only into the Olympics for national pride.

That said, we are going to wreck shite in LA with the built in advantages and increased interest/training for minor sports that come with being a host. We’re going to run away with the the gold and overall medal counts.

Why is the Gold medal count the number that decides who "won" the games? Shouldn't overall medal count matter more?
Because gold means you won. In what other sport do we celebrate second and third place? It’s a great accomplishment for the individual athletes… but they didn’t win.

Imagine in the Super Bowl if the losing team was celebrating their second place silver medal finish. We’d think that’s stupid.

There is only one winner, and those are the ones who won gold.

So if you’re counting who won the most events, you only count gold.

McEwan said it was the Kiwi's idea first and he was cool with it.

FIFY; I think he should have to date Swedish women for a while as “punishment”.

Do people actually think these situations are comparable?

People have twisted themselves into a pretzel defending Mondo.

He really has no comparable situations. Just say he chose what was best for him personally and move on

Yeah I mean I've accepted his decision, but it's in no way comparable to Embiid.

It's nothing like that... Those are random events which he has no control and really no honor

As posted above "the goal is to win the gold medal"....well, no the goal is to be the best -which is represented by the gold medal he chose the route to prove it. No one would settle for a tie in the Superbowl or world series ..why make the high jumpers go that route when there is a means for a tie breaker

idk I always looked at the HJ as a contest to see who can’t jump the highest not a game.

lowering the bar is counter intuitive.

i’d be ok if they jumped till they made the higher jump but they were back down to 3.4 and missed 11 jumps each when the Kiwi cleared.

if 2 guys jump exactly as high then they both are the highest jumper.

like i’d 2 guys actually finished at the same
time in a race. that’s possible.

How are they different?

Both have dual citizenship and represent a different country than their birth country.

Mondo’s is actually more defensible because he was born with dual citizenship and is half Swedish.

Embiid is a pure mercenary.

There are dozens of comparable situations, unless you have some weird ultra-specific parameters you are using.
