How much of a cluster will LA be in 2028?

My daughter is into gymnastics and I thought about making plans to take her in 2028, she’ll be 10 by then. LA can be a disaster to navigate on a typical Tuesday, much less when hosting an event like this. Has anyone here attended Olympic events before? Do you think it’s worth it to take a young kid?

If she’s into gymnastics, the Olympics would obviously be an amazing experience, but I’d look into going to either Nationals or the Trials as well. Probably cheaper and still a great time.

We’re gonna go and take the kids. They’ll be 15 and 9 when it gets here.

I need to start planning pretty soon I guess. But 4 years out is a long time.

I assume they already know where every event will be. LA is so sprawling though

I was just reading about the 1984 Olympics. Everyone predicted LA would be a huge clusterf—k of gridlock and smog then, and supposedly it wasn’t much worse than normal, and a lot better in some areas.

Several. I can only compare it to Atlanta within the US but navigation during Olympics is normally done via public transportation which is usually significantly better than normal and has special Olympics targeted transpo, Atlanta certainly did.

I would absolutely take a kid. Plan to spend big money of the women's gymnastics tickets unless by miracle you win the ticket lottery. Try to get as many tickets as you can for most any event in the lottery. When you get there you will wish you had gotten tickets for more events.

The Olympics are an amazing in-person experience and would be a lifetime memory for a kid.

We're planning on going to LA 28, going to try and enter for as many track and field day lottery picks as they'll let me.

Newsome already signed a law about homeless just 1-2 months ago. I think they are preparing to ship em all to who knows where.

I wonder how LA will address the homeless and tent cities.

If it’s like 1984, you’ll have no problem getting around.

It will be great. They just showed on the news Gavin Newsome with work gloves on working his arse off cleaning up LA homeless encampments. What a great guy, LA will be great in 4 years!

The plan LA has is for a car-less Olympics. They want cars banned from all venues, import a ton of busses for everyone to take. They will encourage businesses to have their workers work from home during the games too. We’ll see if it happens

Texas didn't ship any homeless to California. Abbot shipped illegals out and he won't put up with any of Newsom's BS.

At least the gang violence is not like used to be. I'd be worried if this were the late 80's or early 90's.

I spent 10 days at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. I would rate that vacation among my Top 3 over all. I averaged 2 sometimes 3 events per day. Start early with your plans. Gymnastics will be among the tickets most in demand and pricey. Obtain as many tickets for gymnastics events as your finances and the lottery system will allow. Any extras you end up with will be very easy to resell. Don't be afraid to attend other sports that you are less familiar with. Also be prepared that a favorite American or American team may be eliminated before the event you have tickets for takes place. Go to the event anyway. You will still enjoy the competition and experience. Also start booking accommodations really early as well. For Atlanta in 1996 all the major hotels were booked a year in advance. I booked a very nice apartment through the Atlanta Olympic Committee for my stay that actually worked out better than a hotel would have. Again, I had to secure the apartment a year in advance through the Olympic Committee similar to the event tickets.

If you choose to attend 2 to 3 events per day as I did, don't expect to have much time for sightseeing. If you're interested in that you should plan to arrive a few days before the Olympics or stay for a few days after they are over to do your sightseeing.
