Michigan's Kyle Whittingham: "This is unsustainable..."

This won't get the gnashing of teeth and the laughing/finger pointing as Nick Saban's comments from last week did, but Whittingham is definitely reinforcing what Saban had to say:

This is by design
We are headed towards a 32 or so team college super league with salary caps
You then get 16 team playoff out of that league
Literally a college NFL

I saw Dusty May said this week they basically need $10 million minimum per year to stay competitive.

I can’t imagine paying for a team that is crap! Even then football is changing and glad to be in one of those top 15!
I’m curious how a Texas tech survives this given Oil Money!

VOLS will be spending nearly $18m on their hoops roster and that is barely enough to keep pace with the biggest spenders in the sport (i.e. Michigan)

Sorry, but the guy at Michigan has no right to complain, especially since he just chose Michigan.

You never hear coaches bitch about their ridiculous salaries and buyouts being unsustainable.

I absolutely hate what has been done to college football.

Football needs to be removed from the normal AD and have their own league. This new era has destroyed college athletics for the smaller sports.

1. Coaching salaries helped feed the big money culture we have now.
2. No one has to pay players anything. They do because winning is too important, which is the problem. It’s a multibillion dollar entertainment industry, not the college extracurricular activity it’s supposed to be.

Does anyone believe this will last? No.
Need guardrails on how much a player can earn and it needs to be universal. But that can only happen to make them employees ans schools are still resisting that.

The real issue arises with NIL. Even if they are employees and there's a salary cap, you can't limit what they can make separately through NIL. Just like the NFL couldn't limit what Brady made on his marketing deals. And unlike pro sports, in college you'll always have boosters willing to spend massive money on NIL to give their school an advantage.

100% agree. Also CEOs should only earn 10x more than the lowest paid person in their company and we need to cap doctor pay as well.

But there isn’t even 32 teams that can fund that kind of roster.

My guess is that college football is going to resemble Minor League baseball. You will have about 50 teams (SEC, B1G, parts of the ACC and parts of the Big 12, and maybe parts of a new Pac 10). Think about the top half of the ACC and Big 12 being part of the 50.
Then you will have a AA tier (AAC, bottom halves of ACC and Big 12, MAC, Sunbelt, most of the Pac 10, Mountain West).
A ball will be FCS and the lowest of the FBS.

I would never publicly bitch about NIL in any way if I were a major college HC. I would want all recruits to think that I get no greater joy in this world than seeing them get big bags of cash. Probably change my name to Coach Philbin.
