News 2 received tips about patients who received injections of the wrong type of medicine at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown, so we started digging. News 2’s Kendall Ashman reached out to patients, as well as the hospital, and uncovered the extent of the medical mistake and the investigation it sparked. On Friday, Aug. 14, Dorton said her mother-in-law went in for a routine knee replacement at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. Everything seemed normal for the healthy 72-year-old, until the surgical team realized they gave her the wrong medicine during spinal anesthesia. “It was supposed to be the anesthetic. It was supposed to be Bupivacaine, and it was potassium, and we don’t know what quantity,” Dorton said.

According to Dorton, when her mother-in-law woke up from surgery, she was sent to the intensive care unit. While the knee replacement was a success, her family is worried she may never actually be able to feel that knee or any part of her lower body again. “Currently, she has zero feeling, movement, or response to pain from her breastbone down. We don’t know what recovery looks like or if there is recovery,” Dorton said. However, Dorton’s mother-in-law was not the only patient affected. The hospital reported as many as four patients were impacted by this “event.” When News 2 reached out to the hospital about the tips involving other patients getting the wrong injections, we received a statement directly from the president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital’s Midtown and West campuses, Dr. Shubhada Jagasia, confirming the concerns.

According to Jagasia, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown leaders have met directly with each of the families to express their support, connect them with spiritual care teams, and ensure they have access to all the resources and ongoing care needed.

Animal experts say an Arkansas high school football player is lucky he wasn't injured after he discovered a venomous snake inside his helmet at a recent practice. Last week, a player at Maumelle High School noticed the cottonmouth snake, bringing practice to a halt.

I've removed a snake out of a car vent, in the engine, purses, backpacks — in a helmet? Never," Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, told KATV. "It's kind of unbelievable." According to Davis, animal control officers responded to the high school for a report of a copperhead snake in a football helmet. However, after examining the helmet, it was determined that the snake was a cottonmouth. Cottonmouth snakes, which are venomous, are known to hide in dark, sheltered places. "The cottonmouth in my opinion is probably the second most venomous snake here in Arkansas," Davis said. "I would say the rattlesnake is probably the number one. If this snake would've bit the child it probably would've been very fatal." Because the snake was snuggled in between padding of the helmet, it was hard to remove. Animal control officers had to flood the helmet with water to flush the snake out. Animal Services relocated the snake. "It was very unreal," Davis said. "You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real." The cottonmouth is one of six venomous snakes in Arkansas. It is heavy-bodied, normally dark olive-brown to black and has indistinct dark crossbands, except when wet. It has a white upper lip and a black stripe from its snout onto its neck.
