He finally got a gold in 1992, but Dan Jansen went into both the '88 and '92 games as the favorite in both 500 and 1,000 meter in long track speed skating and not medaling in either. 88 though he was racing just after his sister died and he fell in both events.
He did not medal at all in 1992. He finished 4th. He went back in 1994 and won while setting a world record. I've seen interviews where he explained he was so uptight and had gone in with too many expectations and too much pressure. He says he needed to go back and find his love for the sport and gained the freedom to skate without feeling the weight of the world on him.

Another Olympian that comes to mind is the Karoli trained gymnast (Dominique Mochianu sp?) who was hyped for the All Around but ended up being overshadowed by Strung in Atlanta.
Wasn't Shawn Johnston supposed to win the medal Liukin won?
In 1996 in Atlanta, our US team won the team AA. We did not receive an individual AA medal. Shannon Miller won gold on beam, Amy Chow won silver on bars, and Dominique Dawes won bronze on floor. Yes, Strug was on that team, but you are confusing it with the LA Olympics in 1992 that were all about Strug and Retton.

One of his two Golds was because the Korean slipped.
Isnt that what happens in every short track race?

Did Lolo Jones ever get any medals?
She was leading going away until she tripped on the final hurdle in the finals one year.

Yeah, just realized I typo'd that.

LA Olympics in 1992 that were all about Strug and Retton
I still don't understand why they held that competition in the early afternoon. That was the first time that I had anything spoiled by the internet. I was robbed of the suspense when a bunch of us watched it in the dorm.

There was a women's race that cemented my hatred of NBC broadcasting at the age of 8. So much build up of an American runner before the race as how great she is, and then it starts, and they focus on her in midfield throughout the entire race, and they don't even mention that everyone was getting cooked by a white European gal way out in front of the pack.
Telecast focused entirely on her, "Look at her go, oh god she's crying, I'm crying, the emotions are there." and she's in fricking 6th barely staying with the rest of the pack.
frick NBC, and that little goober Bob Costas too.

My two favorite Olympic broadcasts were LA in '84 and Calgary in '88. The common thread? ABC broadcast them both. The '84 graphics were ahead of their time. And Jim McKay is the GOAT. A
Then in the '90s CBS still had the Winter Olympics and they weren't so over-produced but we're a step down. My lasting memory of their time with them was Pat O'Brien sitting in a leather chair by the fire place. (I believe their last one was the first year NHL guys were allowed to come in. After losing, the American team took it out on their hotel rooms.)
It would have been really interesting if Murdoch had been a bit sooner getting FOX going. Imagine the media landscape today if it FOX got the package in '92. I think it's safe to assume he'd use it to get it on his non-US broadcast networks. I doubt there would even be a thought by Paris to push that shite last Friday if Rupert was the one holding the money.

How the hell is Apolo Ohno the example here?

I stand by it. For as much as NBC promoted him over three Olympics and the # of events in Short Track, only two Golds was disappointing to me.
They shoved him down our throat so much.
