Like watching the track and field events, especially the sprints. What those people do is impressive. There’s speed, then elite speed like you see in the NFL, then those guys. The women have been getting a lot quicker too.

I 100% disagree. My favorite part of the Olympics are watching sports that don't get much attention. I grew up watching Wide World of Sports as a kid in the 70s. They showed all the different sports that were happening at the time. Additionally, since my daughter (no pics) was a gymnast and NCAA diver, I lover watching gymnastics and diving as I know all the ins and outs of those sports.
You are bashing. Sports are not "sub par." They just don't have a lot of fans and aren't widely known. That doesn't mean Ilona Maher is less of an athlete. I love seeing beach and regular volleyball, the horsey stuff, rugby, swimming (related to diving, I watching plenty of collegiate swimming), track and field, etc. Although I could seek these out online, they aren't just readily available to watch the best parts of it all every Saturday like on WWS when I was a kid.
To me, the Olympics are all about watching that athlete that has devoted much of their life to their sport, the hard work, the injuries, the process to get there. Maybe it's because I've known several over the years or watched several of them (Kassidy Cook and Simone Biles) since they were in elementary school that makes me understand the stories so well.

I like watching people compete when the competition is meaningful. Despite something being obscure its the pinnacle for those competing and it shows how bad they want to win.
Meaningful sporting events are just entertaining to watch.

Because I love America and like to say we’re the best in the world at whatever we win gold in
Plus the olympians train their whole life for this. Literally dedicate their entire being to being the best in the world. So it’s cool to see the emotion when it pays off.

it's interesting to watch people that have trained their entire lives to compete at some obscure sport.

i love seeing elite athletes from all over the world, in all shapes, sizes, genders, and skin colors compete at what they love.

The end of the women’s rugby bronze match is what brings me back for more.

To watch USA lose in every shooting discipline possible because we have more resources than any country, we have to Americanize our shooting sports and 98% of gun ranges in the USA don’t throw international targets!
We have some glimpses of greatness in shotgun but we are rarely good in rifle or pistol. My sport was 3 position smallbore and it was an amazingly obscure sport for a country that loves guns. The US is a nation of plinking, very few people are interested in precision shooting. The idea of shooting 120 shots over 3 hours puts most gun enthusiasts in the US to sleep.

I enjoy the competition and the nationalism. Plus, watching sports that I typically never watch (water polo, soccer).
I don't bother with the opening and closing ceremonies. I figure it's going to be a woke garbagefest.

I like seeing nations compete against each other even in obscure sports. My son is actually getting into handball.
There was a thread with some comments like this the other day. I've always enjoyed the olympics, but it's even more fun now that both of my boys are old enough to watch and actually be interested.
Many of these are sports that we only get to see every 4 years. These are people that have normal jobs(sometimes more than 1) so they can afford to train and compete at the highest level in those particular sports. When they win(and lose), it's incredibly emotional based on the sacrifice they've put into their training.
I don't know how anyone that likes sports/competition can't enjoy the olympics.

It's the one opportunity you get to watch sports on a grand stage you're unfamiliar with or would normally never watch.
Hlell, I rarely watch the mainstream sports at the Olympics....Olympic basketball for example which is boring with tons of neutral tourists.
The sports where the Olympic medal is the highest achievement in their sport is way more interesting to watch than sports when it isn't the pinnacle such as basketball, tennis, soccer, etc.
The minor global sports are more interesting in this spectacle because it's something you never see on TV. I watched fencing and bow and arrow at these Games just like Curling and the Biathlon at the Winter Olympics....something new and you learn something.

When you are standing on the podium... That's 3 out of 8 billion
Go back and watch the men's 200 free style ... The lead graphic changed 3 x in the last 5 meters
Obscure sports...are a chance to broaden my horizons. I now know the difference in epee and foil
I don't watch hours and hours of equestrian... But that with the back drop off Versailles is impressive
Then there is the human interest component...I get why people go through 2 ..or 3 a days for multi million dollar contacts but ... Getting up early training, going to work then back to training then a home life for year after year to be there, in Paris...all for a shot a couple minutes of being on stage.. that's dedication and I dig it

It's also worth noting that the Olympics gives us the opportunity to see really incredible athletes play together for their country.
The most obvious is the 1992 Dream Team in Men's BB, but right now we have Nadal and Alcaraz playing doubles for Spain together. You can't convince that isn't a fun thing to watch happen.
