Just like soccer where US is usually ranked 12th to 15th in the world, there just isn't a demand in the US. China, imo for the sole reason of trying to beat the US in gold, realizes they are way too unathletic to medal in real sports, so they pour tons of money and resources into the most obscure Olympic events for the sole reason to beat the US. It's pathetic imo, and I think the Olympics should definitely regauge what should be an Olympic event.

The sole purpose of the Olympics is to showcase the most physically gifted humans. Ping pong and Badminton isn't remotely close to that. At least Break dancing requires a lot of athleticism for the moves they make. Ping pong and Badminton don't.

I would split the Gold. Olympics are more about countries than individual athletes to a degree. He chose himself over thinking about the country.

Tbh, the dude kinda seems like a douche looking at his Insta profile. Doesn't surprise me that he didn't compete for the country that has given him everything in life.

which could easily be a gold medal team with just recently retired NFL QBs and MLB players.

So why doesn’t it happen?

Again for the 8th time, there isn't a demand. They don't want to. The thought has never even crossed their mind.

So that’s on the us Olympic committee.

I didn't even notice it until today. Him and his neighbor Ingebrigtsen do have that similar euro d-bag look. I'm not saying he's is or isn't but it wouldn't be a surprise.

No, that's on putting money into the sports where our society encourages participation. As I said earlier, this counter tried and failed with soccer in the 70s. In metro areas it lingered. The '94 World Cup brought it back to the country and it finally caught on leading to the MLS. The USWNT picked up a lot of the slack from the men's team sucking. Soccer in the US was a 50 year journey to where we are today. Do you really expect them to put money into a handball "bar league" of retired players from other sports?

I've seen the pre-94 cycle and the '10s cycle. I think my youngest is typical for many of the more athletic youth soccer players. He did soccer from kindergarten until 7th grade. 8th grade was going to be his acclimation to football year but covid nixed that. He changed his body type from a very thin, mobile soccer midfielder to that of a defensive lineman. After a severe concussion he's now getting to transition over to T&F.

If soccer isn't treated like a primary sport, why would the USOC put a ton of resources into a sport that doesn't have much of a demand? I think we're far more likely to see ice hockey players move over to field hockey than baseball/softball players to handball.

How many medals are left to be awarded? Were one gold behind China as of 9 am Central time. Womens bball should tie it up (for total golds). What else is left?

U.S. Olympics have steered off a bit.

They used to dominate in the count, including Gold.

Do yall realize the US is crushing their total from Tokyo and also only won the gold medal total by 1 over china then?

What is the motivation for the ridiculous criticism by some of you?

Outside of Rio, that has not really ever been the case for gold medals.

You consider 8, 9, 12, & 18 close?

And the 30 years before that where the Soviets got more golds regularly?

The original post is that we used to dominate the gold medal count, and that isn’t the case. We have on a few occasions though. So have other countries.

You said the good medal count has always been close.

There’s facts that say this isn’t true.
