President Angela Reams-Brown said the union has multiple concerns about the separation.

One of the union’s primary concerns is funding.

“They still have not shown anything on paper that says we have the monies we need to run our school system,” Reams-Brown said.

Westdale Middle School teacher Kirk Green said he is not convinced St. George leaders are accounting for everything needed long term.

“They talk about the school system, they talk about teachers, but do you really understand what all goes into a school to make it run day to day? How many different people need to be there? You know, it’s not just a teacher showing up to teach,” Green said.

“We’re already short staffed. What are we going to do now when we don’t have the money to pay those number of teachers and paraprofessionals?” asked Green.

Roughly 500 jobs are at risk if voters approve the St. George school district on May 16. Those employees will have to decide to stay with EBR and hope to be reassigned within the district or resign and apply to work in the St. George district instead

quote:

“What are you going to offer them to ask them to stay? What will your retirement system look like? Will you be able to transfer your years of experience from EBR over to St. George, no you won’t, so you’ll be asking them to start all over,” Reams-Brown said.

Reams-Brown said the decision will impact the entire community.

“Whether you have children in school currently, whether you have grandchildren in school currently, whether you have to pay property taxes, all of these individuals will be affected if St. George is allowed to have their own scho

Just like SWB opposed St George. People in such positions don't like losing power.

All yrs of experience as a school teacher either public, private or any independant school district carries over. Retirement is through the state(trsl) not a parish or school district. This is confusing to hear this coming from a superintendent of education.

She can’t be this stupid? Does she realize that all public school teacher’s retirement falls under the purview of the State Teachers Retirement System?

Stupid arse too dumb to have jettisoned the “Reams” appellation as soon as she had the convenient opportunity.

We thought the same thing. Wild. Crazy that a superintendent said this.

Because the Superintendent didn't say any of this. The story is about the fricking Teacher's Union President.

Thread title is a lie.

How about reduce the administrative bloat by 70%? You've got a bunch of asst. superintendents and vice principals making 6 figures.

Everything quoted are valid concerns if Amendment 2 passes. Would be very helpful for St. George leadership to release a plan to address this. Ease a lot of anxiety.

I am not a teacher in a could be St. George school but have friends who are. TRSL is run at the state level but your retirement amount is based off your salary. If you are in a St. George school what will your salary be?

Just because the money follows the kid (good!) doesn’t mean automatically you will have the same support structures in place in a brand new school district.

Also, Central and Zachary are not great comparisons. Think of district size, distance, and demographics. These shouldn’t be used as models for St. George/EBR.

Bitch, you haven’t shown anything that shows EBRPSS is capable of running the EBRPSS regardless of money.

She isn’t trying to make a real argument, she is trying to keep resources under her control through any means necessary.

I thought St George has been it’s own separate place for years now?

I'm no expert but this sounds very wrong.

Id wager dishonesty is more likely than stupidity.

TRSL is a sacred cow for teachers.

Oh no! You mean they might wind up with constant violence, awful test scores, pitiful product and lousy students?
