Can you hit the hurdles in a hurdle race?

I thought it was a DQ but a bunch I honestly have no idea. Looks like some guys advanced even after hitting them.

I randomly read about this last night when reading about legend Slats Hardin
It used to be you weren’t DQd if you hit a hurdle, however, if you hit one it didn’t count as an official time so you couldn’t get a WR
So, in 1932, Slats Hardin got the silver medal but set the new WR because the gold medal winner hit a hurdle

I've got the image in my head of a hurdler tripping over one and instinctlively grabbing it on the way down. Like I said, if we're splitting hairs at the Olympics over that rule, the person doing it probably has no business being there.

Anytime we’ve dq’d someone for hitting it they weren’t getting out of prelims anyway. Where it hurts is finals of scored meets because that’s costing the team points. Not sure I can remember a scenario of that though.
