The war in Europe had raged since September 1939 and had cost an estimated 40 million military and civilian lives.

Unexploded ordinance is still being found in Germany today. I had to evacuate my house for the day around a year back for an unexploded US WWII bomb.

Was in the town of Bayeux France 2 years ago to visit the D-Day sites. Got to witness a V E Day ceremony. Had quite a few American active military and vets there also. Was pretty moving stuff.

Highly recommend the trip to anyone.

It’s sad all of those Americans died so their own country and ancestral homelands could be invaded by immigrants and postmodernism

I had a great uncle who died in late April in Germany.

Poor bastard stormed the beach at Normandy, slogged through France and fought the Battle of the Bulge only to die in the final frantic moments when you didn't know if those Germans racing towards you were trying to surrender or launching one last Kamikaze attack.

Second that...was there in 2023 on June 5, lots of re-enactors roaming around the little towns. Awe-inspiring place to visit, to be able to stand on the beaches, put hands on the concrete pill boxes and the anti-tank hedge hogs is just incredible.

Was in London last month and went to the Churchill War Rooms beneath the Treasury building in Whitehall. Really interesting to walk in those spaces and to see them preserved as they were.

Makes me nostalgic for a time period none of us lived in. The West is such a shite hole now.

There is still unexploded ordinance from WWI in France. Crazy.

It’s hard not to feel guilty. So many men bled and died for freedom in the West, and a few generations later we’ve treated that inheritance like it means nothing.

Still blows my mind how something of this scale happened just 3 generations ago with somewhat modern technology.

If we aren't careful, we are doomed to repeat it.

Very proud that my grandfather served in Europe as part of a mortar team and earned his Combat Infantryman Badge and two Purple Hearts. His medals and campaign ribbons are my most prized possessions.

I spent four days in Bayeux during Easter weekend 2019 just weeks before the 75 th anniversary of DDay. We took an extensive tour of the D Day Beaches among other things. It was an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone.
