As opposed to blackboard, blackbaud, schoology, etc.?

They all suck.

My kid at Baylor has all finals delayed now.

Is anyone really afraid of some group called “HinyHunters” sharing a bunch of names and assignment grades?

Can’t imagine canvas has much information that people don’t want out there.

It has grades, comments, messages between students and teachers, all sorts of stuff. Plenty of stuff that it's illegal for a school not to keep private.

I finished grading finals at like 4:00 today and when I went to post them, this bs was going on. What’s crazier is that the university is now telling us to have alternate methods for keeping grades after pushing for years to have all grades be kept in Canvas…

Good thing I finished my homework a week in advance and submitted. If only this could happen during finals weeks!

SSN anymore. It's been in like 10 data breaches.

Jesus, I think I average 2 a year going back to 2006. After OPM, it is almost always third party providers I'd never heard of used by a service I actually do, and those third party providers almost never needed my SSN to being with to perform their service.

Agreed, but getting hacked like this after patting yourself on the back a few months back puts them at the top of the shite heap.

Fun fact: Years ago, University of Louisiana system campuses were told to transition to using Canvas - a learning management system which requires the system to pay for its use. Several UL universities were using Moodle at the time (which is free!). Figured some politician was getting paid.

I have found the platform to be perfectly fine, well until now.

Pretty sure Canvas is grading and assignment software. I don't think it has anything to do with payroll. Maybe I misunderstood your comment, though.

To be fair, he didn't understand his comment either.

I understood the comment perfectly. You are just a moron

To the OP they pulled the plugged on the entire system here where my kid goes to school. No teachers got paid

quote:

Intentional "Total" Shutdown

The district chose to shut down the network entirely on Monday, May 4, rather than just isolated segments. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Reason: Chancellor Gregory Smith explained that hackers were attempting to embed malicious code that could "harvest credentials" or financial information over time.

Impact: By pulling the plug on the entire server, the district also cut off access to the internal databases and software that HR and payroll teams use to track hours, process salary distributions, and issue direct deposits or physical checks. [, 2, 3]

That is an interesting move since Canvas is SaaS (hosted on AWS)

Yes Moodle was absolute garbage compared to Canvas. Saying it was free is probably a stretch though. I think that was only if you hosted it yourself.

damn. that's a call back. I developed and hosted a statewide School Nursing curriculum on a moodle server back in 2007 or so. Was pretty well used back then.

when i was a sysadmin at a school I ran Moodle, Nagios, and Cacti for free on linux boxes that served us well for years, but then when we got a new director he got butthurt that i was using freeware and then paid for canvas and solarwinds to replace them which have both had large data breaches at this point

My niece finished her state testing yesterday. Tried to log her on today for classes and got the message. She made an about face and headed back to her room. She’s having a grand old time this morning not doing school work.
