I’ve noticed that a lot of stores locally put in TONS of self checkout stations, yet they are all closed. Is it a theft issue?

Walmart today had 4 live cashiers and about 40 self checkouts that were closed. Pretty aggravating.

They would have to stock and maintain more kiosks.

No need when the amount open can service the demand.

Kroger and Wal-Mart - half are closed, most registers closed, if you use self-checkout, you're often truly on your own

Publix - People are just sitting there at empty registers waiting for you. They stand out front of the line to welcome you. There is a friendly person permanently posted up at the self-checkout to assist.

Yes - actually it is because of theft. Alot of stores are reversing course and getting humans back in for checkout. Problem is they can't get that right either.

I went into the one off College not long ago and they had 2 human checkouts open and like 4 self checkouts, most of which had older folks at them that looked woefully confused about what to do. And 20 or more self checkouts closed.

I think they found that, in practice, these things work well in high trust societies.

Do you often require help with the arduous task of scanning items and tapping a credit card?

They have to have someone to monitor them if they open them up. I’m sure the theft is rampant.

What does this mean? All they have to do is scan their badges to check ID's for alcohol and medicines when they aren't just standing on their phone. And help the occasional retard who can't figure out how to enter their produce manually.

What is there to stock and maintain?

That's not the problem. It's when you scan an item, place it in the designated bagging area, then the dumbass machine yells "PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE" and won't let you continue scanning the rest of your shite. Meanwhile, there's not a person in sight to come put in their dumbass override code so you can go on about your day.

Stock cash and to a lesser extent receipt paper or bags.

Maintain idiots who don't realize how a self checkout work and manage to lock it up and need help.

Have noticed the shittier the store the dumber the clientele and the slower self checkout goes. Whole Foods has one person managing 8 self check outs and it flys. Walmart has 6 and the manager has to scan their card for every person and explain how a scale works or how to spell onions.

I've read that Walmart plans to do away with self check-out due to massive theft.

Dollar General has done away with self check-out for this very reason.

Fair point there.

“Is it a theft issue”

Yes,I asked. Most of the self checkouts are closed,an employee is watching one’s open like a hawk.
I don’t know why stores thought that would be a good idea.

Greed. Less people, less benefits paid, less payroll.
