Let’s talk about Steve Hetzel as there seems to be a lot of smoke on him leading HC search

Hetzel began his career in the NBA as an assistant video coordinator for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2005–2006 season under head coach Gregg Popovich.[1] He later worked as the video coordinator for the Cleveland Cavaliers for three seasons from 2006 to 2009 under head coach Mike Brown.[2]

Hetzel earned his first coaching position with the Detroit Pistons in 2009, spending four seasons as a player development coach until 2013.[3] As a player development coach in Detroit, Hetzel was responsible for creating player progression plans and monitoring player growth.[4]

In 2013, Hetzel became the head coach of the Canton Charge of the NBA G-League, the G-League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers.[5] He replaced D-League coach of the year Alex Jensen, who left to become a development coach for the Utah Jazz.[6] Hetzel served one season as head coach of the Charge leading the team to a 28–22 record in his lone season.

Hetzel earned his first assistant coaching job in the NBA in 2014, being hired by the Charlotte Hornets as an assistant coach under head coach Steve Clifford.[7] He worked with the Hornets until 2018 when he was hired by the Orlando Magic where he worked from 2018 until 2021.[8]

In 2022, Hetzel coached the Portland Trail Blazers summer league team to the 2022 NBA Summer League championship.[9] He was named an assistant coach for the Trail Blazers under head coach Chauncey Billups for the 2021–22 season and spent three seasons in Portland.[10]

On April 21, 2024, it was reported that Hetzel would be joining the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach under new head coach Jordi Fernández.[11] The hiring was officially announced by the Nets on May 31, 2024.[12]

Wiki coaching bio.

He actually started as a student manager under Izzo at Michigan State.

He is known for player mentoring/development and his biggest role seems to have been defense. He’s implemented defensive schemes at multiple stops, and favors gritty, aggressive defense.

I can see what Joe and Troy are hoping for here. They're hoping for a diamond in the rough much like Spoelstra was in Miami. I don't hate the vision. It's, at least, different.

He's coached under some good coaches - Pop, Izzo, Brown, Mo Cheeks

I'd still prefer Rondo but I'd take Hetzel over the other options out there.

Yeah same here. Hetzel has a great resume and has never been given his shot. We may find out the hard way why, but at least he has a good resume

The biggest key for a guy like that is surrounding him with experienced coaches, especially a couple of former head guys...I just fear he's not as renowned and respected as Rondo is around the league so we're going to be hard pressed to get quality names to come here to be on staff.

We will need a really good offensive guy like Micah Nori to come in which will be really hard to do.

I do think we could possibly get Splitter to be AHC since they worked together in Portland.

It’s better than Ham . I’m guessing he has a little more experience than Rondo. Perhaps it is a diamond in the rough hire? Do we know for certain he got the job? Jake has been flipping all week. Monday he was saying it was Mosley .

You think?

I'm still holding out hope for Jared Dudley. This is not an indictment of Hetzel; I just like the idea of a coach who has, in fact, worn an NBA uniform.

DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!!

J.J. Has no coaching experience. So I really don’t think it matters anymore.

Anyone but Ham. If its Ham I’d just assume bring Borrego back. Hetzel could be a good hire but I just think Rondo would provide the team and the fanbase the jolt it needs. You’d need to surround him with experienced assistants but Rondo has one hell of a basketball mind.

As long as it isn't Ham. He seems like the laziest choice of them all.

Kerr returning to the Warriors which leaves Donovan for the Magic.

Only Jobs left:
Pelicans
Bulls
.
.
.
Blazers*(dancing around replacing splitter right now)

Doesn't seem like the Bulls will have the same type of candidates so it's really up to Dumars to pick from the guys they want. Really hope it's the right guy.
