Just came to say our resident limpkin is a badass. We have a 4 acre pond and I have yet to see any apple snail eggs this year. The banks of the pond are littered with clam shells. We sit at the dinner table just watching it do its thing walking up and down the banks feeding.
Lil SI even said he plans to do a science project on the limpkin next year.

Its great to hear about the expansion of the Limpkin range because of those horrible snails. I don't even know the symptoms or effects of "rat lungworm" to know it must be awful.

Limpkin is probably the coolest name for a bird to boot. If you know of a cooler name lmk.

I have seen them in Rapides even though I have seen zero signs of the snails. Either they also eat other things, or they do their job incredibly well.

one has been hanging out in a gully by my house - never seen an apple snail there yet - but have about a mile away.

They aggravate the hell out of me during duck season. But there’s a flock down there doing their best at land building using snail shells. There’s a couple islands they really like to eat them on apparently.
