400m should be the marquee distance in T&F

It's the greatest test of strength and stamina.

I ran track for three years in high school and it was the 100m then and will continue to be.
The 100m is such an easy race to watch. No curves, no staggered starting blocks, and just run as fast as possible without worrying about pacing yourself.

Best test of burst and speed. The 40yd dash, 60m, etc give more advantage to quickness. The 200m is more reliant on long speed. The 100m is a nice compromise.
The 400m is a great test of long speed that is also very reliant on endurance. I tried the 400m my senior year and it's a completely different race than the 100m. Was a much better 100m guy.

Easily, the 100 is cool and all but it's over before there is any chance to build drama. Also super reliant on reaction time which i get is a skill but it's billed as pure speed

The only problem with the 400m is the stagger… it’s hard to really tell who’s leading until the final turn.
The mens 4x400 is the best even imo… esp after the cut line on the 2nd lap.

That would be the 400M Hurdles

People want to see what human can get to the absolute fastest MPH of anyone in the world. The 100 meter delivers that, the other races don't. What the people want will always be the marquee.

1500m has a lot of excitement too.

I would agree
It’s a grind of a race.
The 800 would be second imo

100m - Who's the quickest?
200m - Who's the fastest?
400m/800m - Who's the ultimate running machine?

Go watch David Rudisha run the 800 in the London Games
That was the ultimate max effort ... Could have just as easily win a tactical race but dude decided it's the Olympics deserves the best and ran, arguably, the greatest race ever run
So when the 800 is run like Rudisha ran it.. It's the pinnacle
The 4x400 is the most exciting event in any track meet.

I would agree with you on this, but I hate the change overs. There's just a mass of people waiting to take the batons, bumping into and stepping all over each other. I can't think of any way to change this, but I wish it there was some way to change this.

At the completion of the final turn of the leg, whatever place that team happens to be in, the next runner would have to move to the lane matching that place in order to receive the baton? Maybe have an official at the exchange area who would facilitate placing the next runner in the proper lane?
Obviously has its issues as well, but seems it would be less of a clusterfrick.

This is essentially how it works already. You line up based on what position your team is in then scoot into lane 1 as teams hand off before you. It's still a cluster but I don't think there's a better way to do it

I mean do you need more stamina than the 1500?
the 100m is famous because it’s the fastest.
400m is impressive but it’s not the fastest or the farthest.

400M the most physically taxing.
Interesting this year thought the 1500M final was the most entertaining. Cole Hockers final 100M was nails.
