No. That's part of the problem with US athletics compared to other countries. We aren't replacing our aging team with competitive replacements. The age coming up is a generation taught that the kind of hyper competitiveness required to keep pace is mean and shunned. We've got lots of great people representing the US, but fewer and fewer with with that killer competitive mentality.

Thanks for the laugh. When it comes to building monsters in swimming, no one does it better than the U.S. Some of these age group kids are absolute savages. They’ve got the physical and mental toughness to take care of business.

Her specialty has always been in the longer distances (800M and 1500M). She was just such a good swimmer that she was also able to dominate the 400M during her prime, and compete in the shorter relay distances.

It’s like an 800m runner winning a fricking 200m sprint.

No, it's not.

There's so much more competition on the track (because, you know, running is natural to humans and a part of numerous sports and games) than in the pool.

There's less incentive today for the best athletes in the United States to pursue traditional Olympic sports. Anyone who can be successful on the football field, the basketball court, the baseball field, the golf course, the soccer field, the tennis court, or the hockey rink would be a fool to jump in the pool where there's little money and no one is going to give a frick about what you do except for about a week every four years.

Good thing she didn’t call it a career or she would’ve missed out on this gold medal today.
Dominate performance.
Anyone else need to call it a career before they go out and compete?

Anyone else who should hang it up, TigerBR1111? I'm heading to the casino tonight.

It wasn’t me who told her she should hang it up. You got the wrong guy.
