As soon as I read this quote from a press conference by leaders at USA Gymnastics, I knew this would become an issue for commentary and speculation. So, it may as well get out in the open so people can have their say.

Is there context for this? I don't know. Simone is 100% one of the top 3 on the team for everything. I don't know why she wouldn't be in every event during the team competition.

(Cecile is one of Simone's coaches.)
Chellsie Memmel: "I had a conversation with Cecile already, talking about Team Finals and 'what the expectation on Simone is and if she doesn't feel like it's going to be in her best interest to do all four events that day, is that an option for her?' And I said 'absolutely.' If that's what she needs to continue to be at her best for her team and for herself, then that's what we're going to do, because there are still four other members on our team. So I think for her to just know that she has that option, now whether she takes it or not, it's going to be completely up to her - because we also talked about that, with her at worlds last year and she ultimately decided to all four events during team finals, but I think just for her, knowing that that is a possibility, I think that helps."

As a reminder, here are the results from Olympic Trials. Simone is out of the top 3 on beam, but that was with an uncharacteristic fall (Suni fell as well). But she is still top 3 of those on the team. She and Suni will post the best beam scores at the Olympics for the US, most likely.

I don't have any hate for Simone Biles but I do have hate for what happened after last Olympics. After Simone Biles went out another American girl won the all around gold. All I saw in the media was talk about Simone Biles. That girl should have been a household name and should have been endorsing everything products left and right. I hardly heard a word about her. The talk was still about Biles. IMO that girl, Sunisa Lee, never got her day in the sun and that bothers me.

Your head must've been buried then. She got a ton of endorsements, was on Dancing with the Stars a couple months later, got plenty airtime for Auburn gymnastics when she decided to go to college. Even had some Bachelor dude following her around to Auburn meets.

Hate is way too strong a word, but she does get on my nerves. I prefer the GOAT 2012 team (really bummed about Gabby’s injury)

And Shawn

You just put out the bat signal for every guy sitting on his couch screaming that she’s a traitor to the team.

As an Olympic All-Around champion, Suni did not get the amount of hype she deserved, and neither did the rest of the girls in the team - they won a silver after the team captain and best gymnast on the planet suddenly left the competition, right after it started. It's the most clutch performance in the history of women's athletics in the US.

That said, she did get a good bit of attention, opportunities, endorsements, etc. Suni was never mistreated and she's gotten a massive amount of support since she developed some health issues, so she's not a forgotten person by any stretch.

The point of this thread was to throw out that quote because I have a feeling it's going to become an issue in some way. We just had podium training today and the order the athletes went in would suggest that Simone might, possibly sit out an event or two during team finals. This could hurt the team score and I fully expect the haters to flock to that quote and do what they do. Now, it may not make a difference in medal placing or it could cost the US a gold medal. There's no way to know right now.

There's a Brazilian gymnast that may debut a new vault with higher scoring. Would that become an issue? I don't know. But, instead of derailing the gymnastics thread, maybe the discussion can be vectored into this one as it will surely entail ancillary issues and so on and so on.

That quote was going to get out there - probably during the team final, on the TV broadcast, during the wrap up show etc. It's going to be a lightning rod, may as well keep it in this thread, if possible.

Simone biles has a net worth of 20m and she bailed on the last olympics.

She really needs to step it up and do the events. It's the olympics..

I watched the practice yesterday and she was all smiles and giggles..

She does not seem as focused as the others. She seems loves the attention but not the work..

And I guess that's what 20m will do for the desire.

Seems like people are getting triggered by a “what if” scenario.

Some facts and opinions

Fact: Biles is the best.
Opinion: Her melting down in Tokyo was soft
Opinion: If she decides to play for herself rather than UsA then she should not be considered amongst greatest because that weak shite

I’m gonna give her the benefit of the doubt though and assume she does in fact do the team events and leads USA to Gold.

I thought the exact opposite. I thought she was extremely focused. How could either of us know her mindset?

You don't know much about high level competition, do you? It's different for everyone, but many individual competitors do better when they stay loose and keep it fun. Overly focusing on the routines, skills, and competition can get in your head and actually make you perform worse. Some people focus and listen to music. Some like to joke around and keep it light. Some are totally in their head and visualize routines all the time. No way is better than another. They do what works for them. Considering what happened last Olympics, I can see that keeping it light might work really well for Biles. She has the skills. They aren't hard. She needs to not get into her head too much.

She's always been all smiles and giggles. She has a quirky personality outside of competitions, but when the competition starts, she's focused. She is dominating women's gymnastics right now, she could retire right now as the goat, but instead she came back because the desire is still there. What a ridiculous take. The 20m has not effected how she has performed, any small amount of research would have told you that, instead of basing your opinion of her desire based off one practice you watched.

Fact: With 4 Olympic Golds and 23 World Championship Golds, Simone Biles owes us nothing.
Assumption I'm 99.99% certain is fact: nobody on here criticizing her is a gymnast.
Fact: Regardless of the cause (it is mental), twisties are very real. And while every elite gymnast has gone through bouts of twisties, to do so on the biggest stage of all has to be a nightmare. You will balk mid-air which is extremely dangerous because how you land at that point is basically on God.

Even at the most basic level of gymnastics twistie-like things happen all the time. I used to coach tumbling for cheerleaders, and I cannot tell you how many times cheerleaders would work months just to get a backhandspring... then get it and have it. Then after weeks or months, sometimes even years, of consistently performing it, they "lose it". Meaning they literally lose the skill.

Calling it a meltdown is simply ignorance, but credit to ya for labeling it an opinion.

Though calling it soft is especially comical because that was probably the hardest decision she's ever had to make.

It's actually sad that even 3 years later, any American with a spittoon and a tooth deficiency is still criticizing her for it.
