Imagine being a multimillionaire and dying like this:

Fox News
quote:

A California vineyard owner has died after being crushed by elephants while on a hunting expedition in Africa. Ernie Dosio, 75, was hunting yellow-backed duikers in Gabon when the deadly April 17 incident occurred. Dosio, who kept an extensive collection of animal heads in his home, was trampled to death when he and his guide stumbled into five female elephants with a calf in the Lope-Okanda rainforest, the Daily Mail reported.
quote:

An unnamed hunter in Cape Town who knew Dosio told the news outlet that Dosio had been "hunting since he could hold a rifle and had many trophies from Africa and the U.S."
quote:

Ernie had booked a hunt for dwarf forest buffalo and duikers — in particular, the yellow-backed duiker — and, under strict licensing laws, he could not take along his own guns." The hunting company would supply a shotgun and cartridges for the duiker hunt, he said. The hunter added he believes Dosio and his guide surprised the elephants, who attacked because they felt threatened.
quote:

"I would rather not go into detail, but it is safe to assume it would have been quick," he said. "Ernie was a very well-known and popular hunter in the U.S. and in Africa and a very keen conservationist; he did a hell of a lot of charity work and was a really good guy. What happened has been deeply felt by many on both sides of the Atlantic."

What a way to go.

Bunch of rich dudes paying some Africans to put them on top a lion/elephant and just pull the trigger never really seemed like hunting to me.

What does him being a “multimillionaire” have to do with anything?

Do the Elephants get to keep Dosio’s body?

I know it doesn’t seem like you could just accidentally walk up on the largest land animal in the world, but you really can.

Hard to explain until you go to Africa and experience it yourself. They really do blend right in with the surrounding and are incredibly quiet for their size.

Not against hunting in Africa at all, I just don’t see the appeal of shooting an elephant.

This. If done some hunting in Africa, but there is a pretty good sized list of animals I have no interest in hunting. Elephants are at the top of that list

Think about all the villages that missed out on the meat this hunt would provide!

Looks like karma made a visit. Seems he was a game hunter with his trophies on his wall.

Neither did Ernie.

Until it was too late.

And the most irrelevant fact is part of the headline.

Apparently the story wouldn’t carry the same charm if it had been Florida Man.

It makes it sadder. Dude missed out on several more years of the good life.

If he was an average Joe, the elephant just put him out of his misery.

Had a friend that did a lot of safari hunting in Africa. Sometimes it would take over a year to get the animals that he killed stuffed/mounted and shipped back to the US - lots of red tape and transportation issues.

The elephants just need to find a good local taxidermist but should be able to save quite a bit on logistics.

He went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun

In case of accidents, he always took his mum
