Then there are some jackasses, snobs, and racists.

These people probably are casual fans and only watch every 4 years.

There's a surprisingly large contingent of people that really follow gymnastics but are totally racist. There is or was a youtube channel and the person was racist. Went around to other channels and just spewed a bunch of hate. Got reported a lot. I don't know if that channel is still around or not.

For what it's worth...THE name in gymnastics has chimed in on the floor stuff. For those that don't know, Nadia is Romanian. She defected from Romania after the 1980 Olympics, came to the US and eventually married US gymnast, Bart Connor.
Quite a few comments say there is a bias toward US athletes in the judging.
It's noteworthy that Nadia won the all-around in 1976. In 1980, most people think she won it again. However, there was a meeting of the judges for about a half hour or more, and her final score was below what she needed for gold, and she came in second to the Soviet gymnast, Davydova. She needed a 9.9 to win and most people thought she was flawless. After all that time deliberating, she got a 9.85. This is back when the max score was 10. Those games were in Moscow. The deciding scores came from Soviet and Polish judges.

Am I the only one that thinks the US bowing stunt on the podium was cheesy and stole Andrade's thunder a bit?

You're not the only one. Some are happy to see it and think it's awesome. I'm sure Simone and Jordan meant well, but to be honest, I didn't like it. I like a bit of formality in these ceremonies. Let Andrade have her moment and let her be the focus. Off the medal stand you can do things like that and I think it's totally acceptable. Great for Instagram but for the official ceremony, just keep things professional, that way you get both and don't ruin either.

The whole queen and king thing is confusing. We are Americans, we bow to no one, just like we don't dip the flag.

I root for her and all, but Simone can be pretty grating for me, the Netflix show made her personality worse for me. Then there was the whole getting upset on social media that reporters are doing their job and asking about her future just like they did to Ledecky and all the other older Olympians, but it's a huge issue for her.

I mean she doesn't even have to give them an elaborate answer, give em a quick soundbyte and move on.

People do a lot of fawning over her. I see it a lot with just about all gymnasts. I think it is akin to treating them like children, with hyperbolic praise, and it's like patronizing them.

USAG put out a tweet on Hezly Rivera, who they wouldn't put on the podium for team finals, and called her an icon and a legend. The stuff gets ridiculous at times and it's sort of an insult to the gymnasts IMO, if you aren't honest and objective about things. It's like saying they are too fragile to handle the truth or that they can't function without constant praise.

Whoa. Slow your roll there a little. Absolutely fantastic gymnast. If you want to argue best gymnast ever then yeah. But most dominant American or World athlete ever? C’mon now.

So if someone has supreme athletic skill they get unlimited deference? Is that your position here?

Check out the new Hard Knocks. It's pretty cool seeing her when she's not the center of the attention. I HATED her after '21 but she's been pretty endearing since Owen's signing with Chicago. She pissed off the entire city of Green Bay, which is always a great start.

As the Olympics are winding down and artistic gymnastics is over and the US hasn't been a big story in other gymnastics disciplines...this board and this thread will soon disappear.

Wanted to say thank you to everyone that participated in the thread. For the long time gym followers, I always learn a lot from your posts in these threads. Gymnastics at the Paris Olympics was very good. Lot of storylines, drama, clutch performances, and some new champions.

Italy got their first gold in women's gymnastics. Algeria the same. D'Amato and Nemour remind us how much talent there is outside our own borders and how much the Olympics means to so many athletes. US men took a big step forward, Nedoroscik an unlikely hero and some redemption for Brody Malone after a bad qualifications performance, and Fred Richard being a solid leader throughout. Simone racked up more gold. Suni Lee was probably the best story in gymnastics, not having any idea whether she could ever do gymnastics again back around February, to winning multiple medals several months later.

A few things to capture part of these Olympics for gymnastics:

I’ll admit that I don’t know shite about gymnastics outside the Olympics but I am a bit of an Olympic history buff…..with that in mind I’ll ask this question. Does Russia being banned taint anything that happened from a medal perspective in these Olympics? I suspect they wouldn’t have beaten the US in the women’s team event but every other event it seems like at least a conversation to be had right?

Russia being banned doesn’t taint a thing. They were banned for very good reason. The Chinese should have been as well.

Was the Russia ban for invading Ukraine or still related to state sponsored doping or both?

Russia and Belarus were banned by most sports organizations over the Ukraine thing.

It's a circus and a shite show. Not a great way to end gymnastics at these Olympics.
