DJT is the GOAT. He's done it again. UAE is leaving OPEC ...

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced it will exit OPEC and OPEC+ effective May 1, 2026, ending nearly 60 years of membership in a move that significantly weakens the oil-producing alliances. The decision, confirmed on April 28, 2026, was described as a sovereign national decision aligned with the UAE’s long-term energy strategy, production capacity goals, and national interests.
Key reasons for the exit include frustration over production quotas that limited the UAE’s output despite its capacity to produce more—reportedly up to 4 million barrels per day, with ambitions to reach 5 million by 2027. Tensions with Saudi Arabia, uneven compliance by other OPEC members, and perceived lack of political and military support from Gulf allies during the Iran conflict further contributed to the decision. The UAE’s energy minister, Suhail Al Mazrouei, emphasized that leaving the cartel would give the country greater flexibility to meet global energy demand without being bound by group obligations.
The UAE is OPEC’s third-largest producer, contributing about 15% of the cartel’s capacity.
The exit delivers a major blow to Saudi Arabia’s leadership within OPEC and raises doubts about the group’s future cohesion.
The move is seen as a political win for U.S. President Donald Trump, who has long criticized OPEC for inflating oil prices.
Despite the exit, the UAE pledged to act responsibly, gradually increasing production in line with market demand.
Immediate market impact may be limited due to ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, but long-term volatility is expected.
We don't deserve that magnificent orange bastard.

Bro has had his fair share of self-inflicted gaffes. But overall, his body of accomplishments is still absolutely astonishing.

Watch what this does to the Chinese and Russian backed BRICS and UNITs over time.
India has already bailed. The UAE will be the dagger.
The Dollar will continue to reign supreme.
That's bigger for the U.S. than most realize.

You do realize they have been wanting to break away for the last 5 years. It's much ado about nothing. So long as you have the Saudis and Russians in agreement - mostly, their potential extra million bbl a day is not going to affect us all that much. If MbS opens the spigot again it could potentially be a problem for them. But in a stable market, it's kind of a neutral move for the US and Europe.
ChiComs may welcome the excess

And there are still people asking for proof of any successes to the Iran conflict. >chucklegif<

It doesnt matter what UAE does. If their one and export line to the rest of the globe is shut off, their country won't be worth scrap metal.
I assume this is them throwing another ego lifeline to the US hoping for an inevitable bailout.

1 - it destabilizes the long time OPEC cabal. Those of us old enough to remember the embargo of the 70s, and the price fixing since, get it.
2 - it will, eventually, drive down costs at the pump because of increased supply.
3 - it severely damages China, Russia, and OPEC's BRICS and UNITs plans.
4 - it strengthens our relationship with the UAE on several fronts, and it makes the Saudis come to the table on others. The Saudis do not want to be outdone, especially in Trump's eyes, by the UAE ... or Qatar for that matter. Trump has most of the Middle East jockying for position right now.

US is producing more oil than any country in history, its not the 70s anymore (hydraulic fracturing)

Can OPEC not cut 1mmbbls/d to make up for UAE's extra capacity?

how so?

How would the saudis be "outdone" by UAE? What are the ME jockeying for? The ability to produce at their max capacity?

Because the strait will be locked up forever and pipelines don't exist...

This is something all the people complaining about Trump's foreign policy can't understand.

The UAE can bypass the Hormuz chokepoint, and Saudi Arabia can pump oil to the Red Sea via their east/west pipeline. If Trump keeps the blockade against Iranian oil shipments in place, the UAE and Saudi Arabia can fill the global oil void; however, they need to get outside the OPEC restrictions to do it.
Thus, the UAE exiting OPEC makes strategic sense both now and in the geopolitical longer term. However, in the short run the UAE needs financial stability as the switch is done. Enter Scott Bessent with the currency swap lines for the UAE.
Brilliant planning. Iran just lost all their leverage.

UAE leaving OPEC is monstrous. Big shift in Gulf dynamics. I understand why you wouldn't think so, as it really does make Trump look good.

Trump has broken so many of you that you can’t even be happy for your country or yourself and your family.
It’s truly a sad place to be.

Here ... you know everything.
I'll just leave this here, posted after I posted the above, this is the "experts'" take. You may email them and explain to them why they, and I, are all wrong.
UAE’s shock OPEC exit: What it means for the oil cartel’s future and for crude prices.

Note, that article was posted hours after I posted a similar breakdown above.
quote:
The UAE’s exit from OPEC will undermine the cartel’s ability to influence the oil market.
This is because the UAE is second only to Saudi Arabia when it comes to spare production capacity, a crucial tool used to influence the market.
It also deals a blow to Saudi Arabia’s ability to manage OPEC.
