I'll be interested to know what you think of Pike's book. Good grief that was a slog for me. A ton of information but just the opposite of Toll. And I guess I'm old school, but I am not a fan of having to put the book down and go online for the maps, pics, etc. I think it's over 1,200 pages, requires commitment :lol:
Have you read Ian Toll's Pacific War Trilogy? I couldn't put them down. Very readable, does a great job of combining the campaigns, facts/stats with the personal stories. Also provides insight into the Japanese perspective & includes some interesting (& bizarre) stories from Japanese archives. I'm a big fan, "Six Frigates", the origin & early years of the US Navy is also terrific (jmho).
