Are the Heptathlon athletes the best ones or not quite good enough to specialize?

Honest question because I don’t know.

Would all these people doing the Heptathlon rather be doing a specific event like the 800, 100, etc…. Or do other track athletes look at them as the best of them all since they do so many different things?

They are all around athletes but not good enough to medal in their specific fields.

But it is funny how bad some of them are at certain sports.

Hell, watch the decathalon guys on the pole vault

what’s the most common events they branch out from?

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was a world class athlete in both the Heptathlon and Long Jump. She won gold in both events in ‘88, and won multiple Olympic and World Championship medals in both during her career.

200-800 sprinters seem to the most. You're not going to get a shot-putter or discuss thrower go out and be able to compete in the least bit in the jumps or the sprints.

Look at the 800m gold time and the Heptathalon 800m times.

They're way way far apart.

There's a huge difference in bein good in a lot of different disciplines....

And being great at one thing.

200 times were massive as well.

They were basically 2 seconds slower than Gabby Thomas gold medal time.

I know that, I’m asking which is more prestigious.

Or also if you grabbed the best say 800m in the world and put them in the Heptathlon, would they win it? Assuming they have some time to prepare

I imagine theyre not quite good enough to specialize in any of the events and be competitive at the Olympic level. But they're probably good enough compete at collegiate level for most events;

I’m not claiming any of the Heptathletes could compete in the 800M, but that’s an unfair comparison.

The 800 in the Heptathlon is the last of seven events squeezed into two days. They are sprinting, jumping, and throwing for two straight days, then told to go run 800 meters.

World class women can run the 800 in under 2 minutes. The fastest in the Heptathlon are closer to 2:05 - 2:10

I think the long jump is where the best start. If you think about it, every event requires power in their legs.

People like Carolina Kluft would do the Long Jump aswell as the Heptathlon so I would say that

Same on hurdles. They showed a graphic that Sidney runs hurdles in 400 comparable to 400 runners.

Can she not quite really hang with 400 runners? Or is hurdles considered more marketable or prestigious? I would think not, but not sure,

She's not taking a chance of coming in second to Paulino.

You probably just chose the hardest running event at the Olympics to compare. Also, picking the gold time to the heptathlon time is probably the wrong way to go.

I would think most heptathletes were some mid-distance or jumpers who had the ability to run and a coach pulled them aside and introduced the sport to them. That or it’s the track athletes with severe adhd.
