IT help needed before I throw this router out the window
Ok heres the deal. Bought a new laptop for myself for christmas. It has Windows 7 on it and I have Eatel fiberoptic internet service at home on my desktop. My desktop is totally shot so whatever yall suggest, I hope it doesnt involve my desktop at all becuase it has some seriously virus'. Anyway, Since I have fiberoptic internet service, I dotn have a modem and the instructions for this Linksys WRT160N router is telling me to plug the router into the modem. How the hell do I fix this? It wont connect me to the internet if I go straight from the router to the laptop and from the laptop to the wall. I know that I am partially computer retarded but someone please help me....please.

Not familiar with Eatel's service...they just provide you with an RJ-45 (network jack) to plug into? What happens if you plug your laptop straight in and reboot?

What'd you plug in to your previous computer, probably ethernet coming out of the wall? Take that and plug it into the router. Make sure it's going in the right port. Just looked on the linksys site and it looks like they have a port specifically labeled Internet. Use that one.

Im not sure if its an RJ-45 but its a white internet cord, much like the blue internet cords that you get with the router. I do know its fiberoptic though. Sorry if that isnt much help. I havent tried plugging the white cord straight into the laptop b/c personally, the reason I bought a laptop instead of another desktop was becasue I wanted the freedom of not being plugged in all the time.. What would you recommend I do? I've read some stuff on the linksys website about IP addresses but I think my lappy is configured right. For some reason it jsut wont link me to the internet.

Does the cord coming out of the wall just look like a big phone cord?

well heres the thing. I called Eatel to verify that somewhere in my house there was a modem and their answer was "no- Fiberoptic service does not require a modem" So I dont have a modem at all.

Plug it into the laptop and reboot just to see if you can get online.

Eatel does not use modems. Just take the network cable that they bring in to your house and plug it straight to your laptop to make sure the internet is working.

After you know it's working, just follow the router instructions. Consider the network cable coming in as your "modem" and plug that to your router

You have to have something to plug it into.. You cant just "plug" fiber into a computer...

You also might have to use an ethernet cable to plug the laptop into the router if you have a situation like the router's wireless service being turned off. They usually have a web interface located at LINK / for you to adjust your router settings

I have eatel. They run the connection from the box on the outside of your house to whichever room you want. It is supposedly a direct connection to their internet.

Anyway, take the wire coming out of the wall that was connected to the desktop and connect it directly to your laptop. Try connecting to the internet.

If that works, take the cord and plug it into the internet jack on the router. It usually has a different color surrounding the jack to distinguish it from the other ports (usually numbered 1-4). Take the cord that came with the router and plug it into 1 and then into your laptop. Check the internet. If it works, unplug it from your laptop and use your laptop to search for the wireless network. It will probably be named linksys and have a full signal strength. Connect to it and check the internet.

You could also rename the network and set a password on the connection, but I would worry about the above first.

That is retarded. you have some sort of device in your home that starts your internet service.

And you're just now asking the OT for help

So have you pluged the cable directly to your laptop yet? 1st step is to verify internet is working, next step is to work on the router.

Actually you likely are because no one is that stupid.

Okay, I'm not familiar with Eatel, but I imagine you get your internet from a cable because as far as I know magic internet has not been invented yet.

A router needs to be plugged into electricity first, I hope I am not taking a big leap by assuming you are capable of providing this electricity yourself.

All service providers provide you with an ethernet cable. You know, when you have cable internet.. the thing coming out of the modem... is ethernet (wow!). Take that cable... (Yes, I know it's not actually coming out of a visible modem, but don't let you deter that from doing this!) and plug it into the router where it says "internet" or "WAN" (you should hear a click!). Now your router is connected to the internet! Then plug a cable from one of the router's ports into your laptop, open a browser, type in your router's IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and set up your wireless options. When you're done, unplug the laptop and connect to the wireless network.

Amazing!

Wow you are a complete a-hole.. and at Christmas time. It takes a lot to be that rude at Christmas time.

Anyway, I did mention that I was partially retarded but Im not a complete idiot. Yes the internet comes from a fiberoptic wire from my wall into my desktop at the moment. The router is plugged in and powered up and the everything on the router is lit up just as it is supposed to be. Nevermind, all these other nice people helped me and gave advice so I dont need any help from you. Thanks and have a very merry christmas!!!!!

P.S.- all of those extremely steps that you mentioned above were all done, in that order and guess what, it didnt work. I even reconfigured by IP address and it still wont work.
