I think this is a solid approach and has been due for a long time. Even before going test optional; LSU's entrance requirements have been laughable. Make the flagship campus more prestigious and boost enrollment at the satellite campuses and UL system schools.

The ACT was required back when I started in 1980. But back then, state law required all public universities to accept any student (or at least one parent, really) who was a Louisiana resident. So there were remedial courses available for all the basic freshman courses. That all went away when the current community college system was set up, rightly so.

This is actually a pretty great plan. It allows for underperforming students to work their way to the flagship by using the feeder program, and it elevates the status of the flagship.

The 3.5 gpa thing is terrible
Public schools give you a 4.0 for showing up. The act used to be somewhat impartial but it seems like it has been watered down bigtime. But even back in the day you’d get a 22 for writing your name

My HS QB got a 13. Played at McNeese and graduated. Two of our RBs were rumored to have gotten a 6 and a 7, which happened to be their football numbers. They went SU for a year or so then dropped out. IIRC 21 was the minimum for LSU in 1985.

I’m not sure what they’re offering now, but with a 3.6 and a 30 on the ACT LSU was still almost $30k/year out of state in the late 2010s. If I wasn’t die hard P&G, I would’ve laughed at them and been a Faggie.

I can tell you certainly that a 35 ACT and perfect GPA does not guarantee a full ride at LSU.
There are very few of those handed out.
