Act is measuring ability to read and do math. That's pretty important.

That is true but tuition elsewhere will still cost you at least 30k a year even with scholarships.

LSU will require test scores for applicants with a GPA below 3.5. Although there is no minimum score required for admission

We're they not interested before? This doesn't change anything
The issue isn’t they weren’t bringing in alot of qualified students, the issue is how low they allowed the floor to drop to

In 1995, undergraduate admission requirements at Louisiana State University required graduation from an approved high school with a minimum academic high school grade-point average (GPA) raised to 2.30 (up from 2.00 previously) on a specific set of 17.5 core high school units, or an acceptable GPA/ACT or SAT score combination on at least 16 of those core units.
Any warm body could get into LSU before 2000 or so. So lsu basically not accepting every pulse that applies is actually a very new thing

Can we get an ACT score poll? Now I'm curious.
Best I ever did was 18. Three college degrees and a 250k truck nut offshore job.
If I had it to do all over again…..
I would’ve bought the fish house next to my camp when it was offered to me for 80k. I’d be sitting on the river all day selling fried fish and chicken.

LSU’s new decision to shift to a stricter mode of admissions comes in light of trying to push top 50, but it may fall short of those who saw LSU as a ‘safety’ school.
At best, LSU has always been a safety school.
LSU was basically open admissions for in-state students until the 90s.

I think it used to be more so a job readiness program, but it was for high level jobs and very specialized. You went to college to study to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc.
When, exactly?

Yeah these threads, especially from the GenX and older crowd, are always hilarious. LSU was seen as a shitty academic and elite party school until the mid-00s, when it became a mediocre academic and mediocre party school
Anyone about...say 47 or older who went to LSU who is acting high and mighty about admissions is living in a world of cognitive dissonance. I will wager big money they also believe they grew up in a much safer period of America, too.

Lots of schools had loose admissions process in past. I have friends that went to UT-Austin that would not get in today.

Most flagship publics were except for the Michigans and UVAs of the world. You would be astonished how tough it is to get into Florida State today.

You're 100% correct, but UT has become an elite institution in that time. LSU never was that, but there is a weird false memory by older people at LSU did reach that status. LSU has always been, at best, mediocre in terms of academic standing/prestige. Gen X posters pretending that LSU's reputation is somehow being harmed by returning to the status of LSU of their era is just cognitive dissonance, in my view. The halcyon lens is what I'm referencing.

I had a 2.9 and a 23 ACT. I was lucky to get in to LSU I suppose.
I graduated with a 2.6. I didn’t really try to be honest.
Grad school with a 3.62
I turned out alright in the end but I probably was ULL material out the gate.

Both the floor and the ceiling are being masked by inflated GPAs that are going unchecked by not having ACT/SATs as well as being holistically enhanced/ignored.
A big issue is how many people are getting scholarships and into honors college with inflated GPAs and without submitting their ACT or SAT scores, and how many of those might be getting better offers than those with a similar or even slightly lower GPAs with higher ACT/SATs and from high schools with higher academic standards & rigor. The holistic approach was not just for admissions to the university but was used for scholarships and admissions into honors college.
Over half or 53% of the 2024 fall freshman did not submit ACT/SAT scores. 43.08% of the non-submitting enrollees had 4.0 GPAs. Over 62% of the non-submitting enrollees had 3.75 to 4.00 GPAs.
Along with the 2026 Spring demographics in the enrollment at glance chart LSU has also still not posted the Common Data Set report for the 2025 incoming freshmen that would show the numbers for that class which are likely to be worse due trends under Tate.
Surely no one thinks that the very fast diversity changes under Tate were purely out of blacks and other non-whites just being shown an interest by Tate versus being paid in various amounts thru school controlled scholarships and grants on top of Tate seeking to increase the % of Pell Grant eligible enrollees.

Those numbers were more than adequate in my day (mid-1990s). I knew people who got into LSU with 17s and 18s.

Good. I’ve been thinking I would not send my kid to LSU in its current state. This could change that.
