Is taking the Dauphin Island Ferry to Fort Morgan worth it?

I've never actually taken it. Heading to Fort Morgan today for just a little weekend getaway.
The timing lines up where we would likely get there to the ferry terminal maybe 20 minutes before departure. Not sure it is worth it and if we don't get on board we would be much worse off than just going through GS and back around.
Thoughts?

We tried to take it last time we stayed in Fort Morgan. The ferry was not on time.
I've taken it several times before. You'll see some rigs, seagulls, and dolphins.
On Dauphin Island, the aquarium is a good stop if you have kids with you.

I've taken it 4 times, all when time didn't really matter.
It's really neat to do; the way Mobile Bay widens out into Bon Secour Bay and Ft. Morgan and Dauphin Island are long spits of land, it feels like you are at the end of the world.
Twice I did it at sunset and it was really cool. On the first trip some local ol' baws broke out the whiskey bottle and had drinks on the ride over. I made sure to do that the next time I did it 4 years later.
Just last month I took it the other way (Ft. Morgan- Dauphin) coming back from Florida. Still a neat thing to do.
On the bay looking west; Dauphin Island on the west and in the distance on the right you can see the Dauphin Island bridge.
ONE THING TO NOTE -- when you are on the ferry, your auto is NOT allowed to be running. So if it is hot, you cannot sit in your car with air conditioning. And there are no enclosed air-conditioned areas for passengers on the ferry.

When gephyrophobia got the best of me we avoided the Mobile causeway by taking that ferry. If timed right, taking the ferry and staying along the beach into east of Destin added one hour to the trip. Of course, missing the ferry or hitting traffic in Gulf Shores could add another hour.
But there were several benefits. First, it meant we avoided the awful causeway and tunnel in one of the worst cities in America with some of the worst drivers in the world. Two, it broke up the trip nicely into nearly two equal halves (usually 2.5 hours to the ferry and 3 hours from Fort Morgan to east of Destin). Three, it cut a good hour from riding along the monotonous concrete I-10. Fourth, we would stop in Bayou La Batre along the way and load up on jumbo lump straight from Junior Barbour when he sold from his plant. I remember when jumbo lump was $10/pound. Fifth, we would also get to stop at Lighthouse Bakery in Dauphin Island.
In short, circumventing America’s worst city and drivers by taking a ferry is an excellent idea.

If you are going to Fort Morgan, yes. Absolutely. Keeping in mind they don't do reservations so you may have to wait a few trips in line. If you are coming from I-10 west of Pascagoula it's probably a time saver and definitely fun.
Otherwise you have to cross the bay (sucks arse) drive out 10 (potentially sucks arse) then grab the Beach express or 59 (really sucks arse) and bushwhack it out onto the island (sucks hemheroidal arse). I bloody hate driving the land route to Orange beach. I generally wont go.

Ferry not that big. On holiday weekend you may not even get on unless you are early. If that happens, you leave or wait it out.
