LSU head coach Lane Kiffin explained why he believes it's important to invest in multiple quarterbacks through the transfer portal during a Wednesday appearance on the "Brandon Walker College Football Show."

Kiffin pointed to Oklahoma's disastrous 2022 loss to Texas as a lesson that shaped his roster-building philosophy.

"If you've seen our model, we always just go pay a second quarterback," Kiffin said.

Kiffin recalled Oklahoma losing starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel to an injury before the 2022 Red River Showdown, which ended in a 49-0 loss to Texas.

"I said, 'Oh, we'll never not go pay a second quarterback,'" Kiffin said. "Oklahoma was a really, really good team. Lebby was there, and they lost their quarterback, and they lost 50 to nothing against Texas."

Kiffin said the experience reinforced his belief that teams can't afford to put all their resources into one quarterback.

"To me, you can't just put everything into one quarterback, and then you really wasted your whole team, what you paid for and put together, when that guy gets hurt."
