VERMILION PARISH, La. (KLFY)– Vermilion Catholic in Abbeville is implementing new policies governing student use of social media, artificial intelligence and technology beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
Under the new policy, students through eighth grade will be prohibited from maintaining social media accounts. School leaders said the changes are designed to protect students online, promote healthy technology habits and reduce distractions. The policy will expand to include ninth-grade students during the 2027-2028 school year.
The social media policy defines prohibited platforms broadly and includes sites such as Facebook, Instagram, X, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch and Roblox, among others.

If only all these kids had... fricking parents.

Vermillion catholic now includes pre-k -12th so it looks as if this only effects the kids up to 8th grade for now

I don’t see how they would be able to govern this. Any of those kids could make an Oweo2 TD handle and no one would know.
Social media is a broad term though. If they are just talking about kids not having a facebook/instagram (social media where their face and name are public), that’s a different story. But then again, a parent letting their 4th grader have a Facebook is shite parenting.

In Corporate America, we’re being forced to use AI but in the schools they are banning it apparently.

The school would need parent cooperation... and if the parents were down with it, most would do so without needing the school's regulation.
I don't think the idea is a bad one, just unenforceable.

This is not going to last. The first kid that gets suspended for having a facebook will sue and win. This is like a free money handout to whoever sues first

What's the age for a FB account? 13? How old is the average 8th grader?

I wanna say 12-14 depends because by sophomore year most kids are starting to drive

I’m not saying I disagree with the spirit of it but there’s no getting that genie back in the bottle.

I have no dog in the fight I don’t have kids but really just posted to see the OT dads reactions I see both side but you’re really just asking for trouble doing it
