What type of school you think Vermilion CATHOLIC is?

The kids are free to attend public school.

I'm ok with the school trying this. Hell at CHS in New Iberia we had 2 issues during the year where the school principal emailed all the parents about a couple of situations that happened on Snap Chat with fricking 4th graders.......

Ahhh. I didn’t think of that. Private school, then they can do what they want.

I think the defining YouTube and Twitch as social media might be a stretch.
Why?

Why do 8th graders have smart phones with internet access in the first place?

No, they won't. It will be in the agreement that the parents sign when the kid starts school there. It is a private school.

What is the harm that they will sue to be compensated for? Who will sue?

It’s a private school that these kids voluntarily attend. They can make their rules whatever they want so long as no one is getting harmed.

How can they sue and win? It’s a private school.

They are also free to do as they please away from school. You know, in their personal life.

Smoke some weed “in your personal life” away from school and fail a drug test and see what happens.

People are stupid. The school sent this policy out before the new school year. You’re free to not enroll your student there next year if you don’t like it. It’s like some people think they have a “right” to send their kid to a private school.

I don't think the idea is a bad one, just unenforceable.
I think the school having a rule gives the parent more leverage. "All my friends have it", don't care and also bullshite.

If you have kids or grandkids, I highly encourage reading 'The Anxious Generation' by Jonathan Haidt. Parents need to do more to protect their kids, not just from predators but from some of the pitfalls we are starting to see to cognitive and emotional development that are altered by social media. Kids are not ready for unfettered access to everything all of the platforms give them at 13. There is a reason we are seeing a generation that is dumber yet smarter, maturing sooner but emotionally immature, rising depression, rising anxiety, more addictive...policies like this if they gain traction could help combat some of that with the next generation.

Why? They don't have to go to school there.

Not in Catholic schools. For most of them you sign a morality code that dictates what you can and can't do outside of school as well. If you post pictures of yourself drinking or smoking, they're free to kick your arse out. There's lots of settled legal precedent on this.

Not if their parents sign the form, student code of conduct, or handbook saying otherwise.

Obviously high school is different, but there have been hundreds of guys at Catholic High BR that have learned the hard way how the school can and will enforce the "Student 24/7" rule.
