Dear Friends,

2020 began with such promise and expectancy. It all started for me early in the morning at Dillard’s, Lakeside. With a map in my hand I swarmed the aisles getting the best of the best. It was my best New Year’s sale. So many great purchases were had that making TulaneLSU's Top 10 Dillard's New Year's sale purchases was a joyous, yet difficult task. I can remember going home and eating a huge bowl of TulaneLSU's Christmas chestnut soup. If you have never had it, please make haste to make a pot today. That day, nearly a year ago, was the culmination of one of my favorite Advent seasons, and I expected it to be the start of a great year.

The year went from height to height, as we explored the city’s high ground, the French Quarter, in TulaneLSU's Top 10 interesting things seen in the French Quarter this weekend (Jan 4 and 5, 2020). We also soared above as we evaluated TulaneLSU's Top 10 skyscrapers of New Orleans' CBD, TulaneLSU's Top 10 skyscrapers of Jefferson Parish, and the favorite of many, TulaneLSU's Top 10 skyscrapers of New Orleans East. It was quite an honor when some of the architects of some of the buildings in the list made appearances in the threads. What reach TD has.

We moved from the skies to the waters. It was a bit of a fishing expedition, first touring a special part of the area in TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Bucktown, U.S.A. and TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of West End. Mother and I were able to spend an afternoon together, after visiting the Prytania homestead, touring the zoo, chronicled in TulaneLSU's picture journey through Audubon Zoo.

We shared some delicious meals together. Most memorable were:
TulaneLSU's Top 10 memories and dishes at the Napoleon House
TulaneLSU's Top 10 memories and dishes at Impastato's
TulaneLSU's Top 10 memories and dishes at Rocky & Carlo's
TulaneLSU's Top 10 memories and dishes at Mosca's
TulaneLSU's Top 10 dishes at Kenner Seafood
TulaneLSU's Top 10 dishes at Pancho's Mexican Buffet
TulaneLSU's Top 10 dishes at La Madeleine's
TulaneLSU's Top 10 items at Ben's Burgers.
The year also gave me the opportunity to recollect on some department store dining, and thus, TulaneLSU's Top 10 department store restaurants was born.

Soon after crossing the waters aboard the Algiers Ferry Mardi Gras was upon us. I have quite the mixed feelings about the holiday. It is important in the liturgical calendar and social life of the city, but it has been corrupted with wickedness. Still, though, I enjoy the festivities and especially TulaneLSU's Top 10 king cakes of New Orleans. There was ample time to tour some grocery stores and appreciate TulaneLSU's Top 10 improvements of Zuppardo's. Even better was when Mardi Gras returned to Kenner, allowing me to calculate TulaneLSU's Top 10 enjoyments at Kenner's Krewe of Isis. Little did I know then that TulaneLSU's Top 10 miles walked along the Uptown parade route would be my last walk along that parade route for two years.

Mardi Gras, of course, brings to town some of the world’s finest street performers. I had such joy getting to meet and watch TulaneLSU's Top 10 French Quarter street performers, February 2020. The French Quarter can be a microcosm of the city, and it, like Walmart, gives great insight to the health and general mood of the city. It is also home to some of America’s best museums, detailed in TulaneLSU's Top 10 museums of New Orleans.

2020 will be remembered for many things, none more so than the global pandemic that caused nearly two million deaths and untold suffering from illness, loneliness, economic losses, and disruption to community. Many of us first heard of the disease in frankthetank’s January 23 post about people collapsing in the streets of Wuhan. Many of us had never heard of the city or of Honkus, who found himself in China in need of rescue. Some say Honkus brought the virus back with him, but I think that is a lie.

The outbreak brought me first back to the Arts Board, which some people have called the Movie Board. There I tabulated
TulaneLSU's Top 10 movies about pandemics, which did not seem to be widely accepted as a good list. I felt a bit like Soren, when he wrote, “People understand me so poorly that they don't even understand my complaint about them not understanding me.” So it is for many of us, but especially those of us who believe in a delicate balance between communal responsibility and obligation and personal liberty. It was not and still is not happily accepted by the virus minimalists who rejected my a priori and a posteriori deductions and observations that the latter depends entirely on the former and without the former the latter does not exist.

As February came to a close, it became quite apparent that the virus was going to affect each of us and in some very profound ways. My first trip to prepare occurred on the day before Leap Day, and some scoffed at TulaneLSU's Top 10 quarantine preparations and Lenten sale at Walmart and Sam's (2/28). Soon, though, the panic spread and bags of rice and cans of Le Sueur peas were as sought after as toilet paper. The mood in town and in the country darkened a short two weeks later, evidenced in TulaneLSU's Top 10 lessons learned from Walmart 3/13/2020. And less than a week later, panic truly set in, as our food supplies seemed strained, documented in TulaneLSU's Top 10 lessons from Walmart and Sam's 3/17/2020.

The quarantine time gave many people a break from normal life. It was a time many posters noted quite bucolic behavioral changes. Kids liberated from the mundane life of school once again found joy in the outdoors, as skating and bicycling returned to 1980s levels. Parents joined them, while also starting many home improvement projects. It was a time that many of us were seemingly removed from the pandemic and had nothing but free time. Some of us, probably not many on the OT, even found in the mailbox, not mid-April notices from the IRS, but instead, $1200 checks signed by President Trump.

Outside ICU units, dare I say late March and early April were peaceful times for most of us. The country seemed somewhat united. There was freedom in the air. We had time to ponder trivial matters like TulaneLSU's Top 10 plays in Saints history and TulaneLSU's Top 10 New Orleanas novels. The time also provided reflection on some more important questions, like TulaneLSU's Top 10 book opening lines and TulaneLSU's Top 40 pizzas in the United States of America. I returned to the kitchen to discover ways to stretch food, as my concerns for feeding Mother were heightened. I was able to produce TulaneLSU's Perfect 10 Ezekiel 24 quarantine chicken rice soup while finding a way to upcycle the famed Sam’s rotisserie chicken and its packaging.

Somehow masks became a contentious issue in our country, perhaps among the OT more so than elsewhere. I was ambivalent about them at first, but after reading a few scientific articles I became convinced that they would be helpful in decreasing, not eliminating, the virus and decreasing disease severity. Thus, I put together TulaneLSU's Top 10 face masks five days before the Governor’s mask mandate. I do not know if it was this thread that convinced him of the need. Many of my OT brethren rejected me because of my extreme pro-mask stance, but I would rather lose a friendship than lose the life of someone on the fence who needs that little nudge or reminder that, yes, masks are helpful and a sign of good citizenship.

The highlight of the Christian year, Easter, soon followed. How strange it was to celebrate this most holy of days at home, separated from our brethren inside a church. Holy Week, though foreign in its accidents, was in essence the same at it always had been. The TD community joined in the Holy Week preparations. We toured TulaneLSU's Top 10 photos of St. Vincent dePaul Cemetery, remembering that death is real. But we remembered too through feast and song that death is not the last word. We remembered that dark night on which Jesus broke bread with his friends, even the one who betrayed him, and joined together in singing TulaneLSU's Top 10 hymns for Holy Thursday and Good Friday. We discussed some of our favorite Easter traditions, one of which was watching TulaneLSU's Top 10 Easter films. Finally, on East morning, we gathered to share the great news that Jesus Christ is risen. And yes, he is risen indeed. We sang hymns of great joy and thanks, many which found their way in TulaneLSU's Top 10 Easter hymns.

Eastertide through Pentecost was a beautiful time. We had perfect weather for much of February through mid-May. It was one of the most beautiful Spring seasons in memory. I had ample opportunities to tour the many beautiful signs of New Orleans. Some of my favorites included a grand tour of St. Charles Avenue with TulaneLSU's Top 10 St. Charles Avenue signs, lakeside and TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of St. Charles Avenue, riverside. We headed west to Kenner’s equivalent, Williams Boulevard with TulaneLSU's Top 10 non-food signs of Kenner's Williams Blvd and
TulaneLSU's Top 10 food signs of Kenner's Williams Boulevard. Metairie was not to be denied, as our journeys included TulaneLSU's Top 10 nighttime signs of Veterans Memorial Boulevard and TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Clearview Parkway.

May was the first time we poked our heads up from the bunkers. Our first journey was a splendid tour of the state of Alabama. Visiting the many small towns and Auburn University was a breath of fresh air, a reminder that life in nature moves on, even while we were tucked away in quarantine. I shall just list those Top 10s:

TulaneLSU's Top 10 staircases of Auburn University
TulaneLSU's Top 10 trees of Auburn University
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 flowers of Auburn University
TulaneLSU's Top 10 pizzas of Auburn, AL
TulaneLSU's guide to Goodwater, AL
TulaneLSU's vacation to Tuskegee, AL
TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Ashland, AL
TulaneLSU's review of The Hotel at Auburn University
TulaneLSU's hike of Cave Creek Trail in Cheaha, AL
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 sculptures in the Auburn University Museum’s sculpture garden
TulaneLSU's Top 10 churches of Auburn and Opelika, AL
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 signs of Auburn, AL

When we arrived home we came to read the crushing news that our dearest of friends, OWL, had a stroke. The first few minutes of reading the news on the OT seemed almost not to exist, such was our shock. I know all of the OT is grateful he survived and I hope he is well aware of the great love, faith, and hope we have for him. I really would like to send him one of TulaneLSU's Top 10 chocolate chip cookie cakes

Following our middle Alabama adventures, we found the southern pastoral plains of Foley and Elberta. We basked in the warmth of those beautiful German fields, Stonehenge, and a band of ancient dinosaurs. The farms we visited were bursting with life and produce, a needed reminder that God’s plenty and favor was still with us. TulaneLSU's Top 10 things enjoyed in Elberta and Foley, AL tells that story. One of my favorite things taken from that weekend were heirloom tomatoes, which were caught at their peak. Tasting one inspired
TulaneLSU's thoughts on the fresh tomato. Unfortunately, we had the displeasure on that trip of visiting a place that is near and dear to many Texan hearts. I am sad to say, however, that I am not a fan in any way. Though it angered many of my friends here, I had no choice but to release TulaneLSU's Top 10 things I cannot stand about Buc-ee's. It was a public service to warn the uninitiated of the dangers and disgraces of that shrine to American grossness. Rather than end our series of Alabama towns on a bad note, we returned on Halloween for TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Fairhope, AL. And perhaps the grand finale was a trip to Birmingham and Jasper, AL. TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Birmingham and Clanton did not inspire me. However, the inspiration for the trip, a beautiful documentary film, Jasper Mall, made for a spectacular TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Jasper Mall. I even got to meet and tour the mall with the film's protagonist, Mike:

Mother and I were desperate to help those employed in tourism during these times, so we made the joint decision to start flying again. It was quite daunting, with our first flights in May, when there were hardly any other fellow travelers. Our first return to the air felt, in some way, what it must have felt like to be a deckhand on one of Columbus’s ships. It was entirely different and new and every step aboard felt like a first step.

Because there was so much media coverage of ANTIFA and the general anarchy occurring in Portland and Seattle, Mother and I agreed that those two cities would be on our list to visit. It was important to us that TD get a view of those cities that one might not get on cable news or online. It was clear to us that Seattle and Portland were in a heap of trouble. While we did not join in the lawlessness, we mingled with those who were, even watching one riot start. What was most depressing was the death of those downtowns. Nary a storefront was not vandalized or boarded, and not for hurricanes.

No sooner than returned that I knew it was time to get back in the air. I convinced Mother that we needed to meet SuperSaint in his San Francisco home. When it comes to SuperSaint, it does not take Mother much convincing, as she has always enjoyed his entries. So we returned to the West Coast, again on Alaska Airlines, the best domestic airline in our land. What a marvelous spot on this world the Bay Area is. I will list some of our highlights, while I have several more series waiting for release.

October, of course, is normally the nicest month of the year for New Orleans. At least historically it is. But this year’s warm weather and record breaking hurricane season worried both Mother and me. While professional and amateur meteorologists dangled forecasts of chilly front weather in our faces, Mother reminded us that Front Day had not yet arrived. Until it did, your eyes better look south for tropical weather rather than north for jet stream weather. Like usual, Mother, not the professionals, was correct. I always suspected that we share some DNA with Nash Roberts. Anyway, we all know what happened with Hurricane Zeta, just three days before Halloween. New Orleans was treated, or rather, tricked, with the first hurricane to have its entire eye over the city since 1915, according to some people. No sooner than it arrived did it fly out. Thankfully, according to the Catholics, Our Lady of Prompt Succor protected the city. The occasion prompted us to consider TulaneLSU's Top 10 meteorologists of New Orleans and TulaneLSU's Top 10 weather memories.

When Front Day finally arrived, we had a first -- a Halloween Front Day! What fun it was as we dispensed Bibles to the few who visited from a distance. We had large mugs of hot chocolate and together, Mother and I debated and compromised to form TulaneLSU's 2020 Front Day Top 10 hot chocolates while also considering TulaneLSU's Top 10 Halloween treats.

November was a crazy time for our nation with many people convinced that Trump had won and that the covid vaccines were fake or dangerous. The craziness spilled into our forum. But I think common sense and logic are beginning to restore order. One of the oddest days I have ever spent in the Quarter was the morningafter the election. I have never seen it so quiet yet so restless. TulaneLSU's Top 10 French Quarter election in limbo day observations caused many to lash out against Mayor Cantrell. By this time, it did not matter where you were, as elected officials from coast to coast were publicly mocked and criticized. I have never before seen animosity against elected officials as I have this year. Anyway, Mother and I had a great follow-up trip chronicled in TulaneLSU and Mother tour the Cabildo.

The last few months were a blur. These months and some of the restrictions gave motivation to some of my favorite writings of the year, which I shall list:

TulaneLSU's Top 10 rides of OWA, Foley
TulaneLSU's Top 10 NOLA dry cleaners signs
TulaneLSU's Top 10 boudin stands
TulaneLSU's Top 10 snoballs
TulaneLSU's Top 10 former Time Saver locations
Stacey Dash's Top 10 for TigerDroppings

2020 challenged many of us, but through it all, I believe God was present, showering us with grace even in the midst of trial and loss. Even with some of the deep pains I have felt this year, I am ever grateful that I could share it with you. In total, these writings span more than 300,000 words and contain more than 2500 photographs. I feel privileged that you might have read or viewed even a tiny fraction of them.

We have not any days promised to us, nor have we earned them. For this reason, let us grab each day like a beloved gift and cherish it as we unwrap it. It is a gift. It is all grace. Once our eyes see it as such, even the horrible is redeemed. May your day be blessed, my dear, dear friends. Should one of us depart, we will never be the same.

Faith, Hope, and Love,
TulaneLSU

P.S. As a final Top 10, I present TulaneLSU’s Top 10 TulaneLSU threads of 2020:

10. TulaneLSU's Top 10 weather memories.
9. TulaneLSU's Top 10 bridges of central California
8. TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of West End
7. TulaneLSU's Top 10 boudin stands

5. TulaneLSU's Top 10 memories and dishes at Mosca's
4. TulaneLSU's Top 10 skyscrapers of New Orleans East

TulaneLSU,

Thank you for all the content that you contribute here as I enjoy it very much!

You are a very talented writer - both creatively and technically.

I now live far from New Orleans but your posts always bring back so much positive nostalgia (we must have had very similar childhoods in both eras and geographies around the metro area).

May you continue to post for a long time and may other posters continue to make slightly provocative comments about your mother for a long time as well.

You will always get up votes from me,

Uncle Lester

P.S. Happy New Year’s and maybe see you at Dillard’s in a few days?
