The closest they came to that was with Colangelo and the Dbacks in the early 2000s which made them, supposedly, put more checks and audits on the escrow of it all but they still dont seemingly do a lot of checks on how exactly its being paid for and as long as you can show baseball that you have the money on paper, they don't really do too much to "check" so in theory, this is the exact situation that can make it all collapse

Essentially Mark Walter is being accused of doing a very Ponzi scheme red flaggy thing and given the size of Guggenheim, it would have significant impact if true that would go far past the Dodgers and Lakers

The existence of the insurance companies was known. What wasn't known was the alleged size, what was reported to regulators was like 2bn when what is being alleged is that its actually more like 16bn, and the fact that Mark Walter has a significant affiliation with the companies
