Powerball and Mega Millions drawings push both jackpots to more than $600 million each
Megamillions
$750 Million
CASH OPTION: $550.6 MILLION
Next Drawing:
Friday, 1/15 @ 11 p.m. ET

Powerball
Next Drawing – Sat, Jan 16
Estimated Jackpot
$640 Million
Cash Value: $478.7 Million

MegaMillions
The highest amount won by a Mega Millions ticket was $1.537 billion in October 2018. This is the first time since then that the jackpot has been over $600 million.
January is a big month for Mega Millions winners -- 16 jackpots have been awarded during the month of January since the start of the lottery game in 2002, according to the Mega Millions website. That includes two of the top 10 Mega Millions prizes -- $451 million on January 5, 2018, and $437 million on January 1, 2019.

Powerball
Nobody matched all six numbers in Wednesday night's $550 million drawing, pushing the grand prize to a projected $640 million for Saturday night, the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history and fifth largest in the game's existence.

Keep the public’s mind off what’s gonna happen this coming week. Great timing for them both to take over the nightly news with powerball and mega millions hysteria

I’ll probably end up winning one of them. I’ll post a pic when I do

Eh, I’m in Texas. I’d take that over $500 Million in LA or MS.

(Not true, but I tell myself that to fool myself that I’m happy.)

We've all attended a tiger stadium where they call one lucky seat number and after they call it, you realize its nearly impossible to win because you can actually see what 102,321 seats look like and have instant perspective. The odds of 1/102,321 is 0.000977316%. Now to put the powerball into perspective, imagine sitting in a stadium 2,855 times the size bigger than tiger stadium that holds 292 million people. Do you really expect your seat number to be called?

The lottery is nothing more than a tax on the poor because the large majority of the people who play it are in fact poor and the large majority of the wealthy don't play it because they understand its a waste of money. It doesn't matter how large the pot is, the odds don't change. Bottom line, you would do better wiping your arse with the cash because at least you saved a couple squares of highly sought after toilet paper.

Lottery pools managed by mathematicians have faired well in the past.

You just don't get it, do you?
When a poor man buys a ticket, he's buying hope. He's allowing himself to dream. Whatever shitty situation he's in, as long as he has that ticket, he has a chance at buying Heaven on Earth. That dream is enough to make it worth it.

I'd argue that the winner gets the nightmare, the losers keep their dreams.

I get it. People with very little means are using the money they don't have to buy a fantasy instead of using that money to better themselves or family.

I work in construction and there are a lot people who say they can't afford 20 bucks a week for a company matched 401k but spend 20 bucks a week on the lottery. Its truly a shame and I try to educate as many people as I can. You want a better life? Stop dreaming and actually do something and it will happen a lot quicker.

They CHOOSE to buy lottery tickets.

And doesn’t the lottery help fund things like education?

And if there were not a lottery how many of your coworkers would put that $20 into a 401k?..... none, they would spend it on beer, cigarettes, drugs, fast food, speakers for their cars, rims, hunting, gambling etc....let it go, at least they are working and making money, let them spend it how they choose

This would be a fun topic for a post-grad research paper.

Would be fun to map the expected return per ticket for different lotteries to include the Powerball and Mega Millions. Regarding the PB/MM my hypothesis is that the expected value would be highest, albeit still less than the cost of a ticket, when the payout is $50-$100m.

As a rule I only play the lottery when the after tax pay out is over 250 million. At that point I'll buy one ticket when I get gas.

Yesterday I bought 5 of each. The most I've bought in years and years.
I get its an idiot tax and I only get scratch offs for the kids at Christmas for stockinfs. But someone has to win.
I do hate being behind scratch off addicts in line though. It's sad they just spend spend spend. Should have put that money into bitcoin or TSLA.

Hell seeing my gf who just inherited a little under 2 mil stress over attorneys and accountants to help her make the right decisions made me realize just how stressful going from a middle class guy to worth 500 million overnight would be.

Someone who slowly built that type of wealth knows all the ins and outs of investments and laws and the right people to use. Joe blow the welder has no idea where to start or who is trustworthy enough to let handle that type of money.

If it were me I’d buy a bunch of farmland and lease it out, bunch of personal land, build a house with a vault like banks use, put about 50 mil in cash in that, spread about 10 million around in checking accts, and the rest goes on CDs and Mutual funds and live off the interest
