re: Do you guys honestly like your job?

I don’t like what it’s turned into but only have about 5 years left.

I figured out that more experience you have your value is in dealing with problems that nobody else knows how to handle and get things done that nobody else can do.

It makes for exciting but stressful days. I feel like I’m the Tommy Norris of my company.

This is me. Been with the same company doing pretty much the same thing for 28 years. I liked my job until after Covid. The day to day is so much more of a pain in the arse now. Also the ranking structure has made it much more cutthroat and less of a teamwork atmosphere. I always thought I would stay till I was 57 but I’m most likely pulling the ripcord at 55.

For me, I believe it is the workers. When I first started here, the old timers were a real cast of characters. We made the job interesting and fun. They've all retired now or gone on to glory, and the current crop of college graduates are cookie cut. No personality, no drive, and no ambition. Our "leadership" at headquarters don't have a fricking clue about what is happening out in the real world. I swear I think they just sit around a table all day in the ivory tower, trying to think of ways to frick things up.

I'm going to stick with it though, only because I'm getting a little long in the tooth to venture elsewhere and want to maximize my pension.

I don't dislike it.

About as good as it gets in my profession

I use trauma-informed modalities (like EMDR or CPT) so yeah it can get pretty heavy at times. I'm able to compartmentalize it pretty well at this point but also see my own therapist to manage stuff that may come up with it.

It's super gratifying when you can help someone though.

Office job here with flexible work arrangements. It beats the hell out of some jobs out there. But would I do it not for the pay? Not a chance.

Some parts yes. Most of it is boring things I could do in my sleep. Every once in a while, a project pops up I get to sink my teeth into. That's when it gets a bit fun.

Yes. Creative/entertainment based.
Lux travel at times with decent money.
And generally three months off per year.

I do. Honestly. Im getting paid far more than I thought I would at this point, enjoy the work, great relationship with my team and client, 100% remote, flexible…whats not to like? Some days are irritating, but overall? I would work like this for a long long time.


The one fly in the ointment is that, as with everything, it could change in a heartbeat. I will ride it while I can.

Yeah, being a professor is mostly pretty great. Having to deal with other faculty members can be rough (particularly thin-skinned ones whose entire identity is wrapped in having the letters Ph.D. at the end of their name).
