re: Conclave was a great movie 90% of the time

They clearly matched what the real look is, but using printed marble with a repeat pattern is weak. Especially with the best movie painters in the world in your backyard. Maybe it was a budget thing, but the movie did not look good at all to me.

The Art Direction was not good at all IMO -- they shot at many existing locations in Rome, repurposed sets for the Sistina and built a realistic, but boring basement quarters set with printed marble panels that all looked fake.
Great actors, but not a great movie.

I have never seen evidence of these quotas or have received direction from the studios about hiring practices. And I do a bit of hiring each project as one of the largest departments on a film.

Some of you sound like the obnoxious people who come out during the Superbowl week with hilarious gems like "I don't watch sportball, but i love the parties" etc. Those fun folks that completely dismiss other people's interest that aren't their own.
It is hardly irrelevant, even in a changing industry. Especially worldwide, where the art form is held to a higher standard. After almost a hundred years of existence, is it as popular as it was? No, but is still an entertaining, important part of popular culture and the industry.
Don't like it --- simple -- you don't have to watch.

I am in Pittsburgh now and the local market from my hotel had Tony's .... and for less than $3. it's all over L.A. where I live as well. So is gumbo file powder. The world has gotten smaller in many ways.

Why wouldn't you want to watch all of the films of you're an Oscar voter? The only situation I see is if these are life long voters and eventually lose interest in films but don't want to give up the "prestige" of being a voter. In which case, term limit.
Of course you do, but life also interferes. I most certainly see every film that is a best pic nominee and all the films from my branch. But to see every single film from 20+ categories is not easy, even on the Academy site. I do take advantage of special screenings ... some sweet gatherings with good food and star mingling opportunities.

This rule has been in place for the best foreign film category … it’s enforced on the academy screening room where you have to stream the titles and the system monitors your viewing completion. I suppose one could have an assistant watch the titles … but only a small percentage of the members have assistants or would risk expulsion for doing what we should do and really should enjoy anyway. The rule is much needed, but it’s hard to see everything in all categories

caught a 9am showing here in the Burgh and it was nicely attended for Easter Sunday.
Happy for the New Orleans team that made it come to life ... a nicely done film, especially the musical numbers. A little corny at times for my taste, but Ryan is certainly a visionary.

Was there last night ... of course a sad turnout, even on a mild and clear evening. Amazing to see his talent person, but equally tough to watch Crews struggle all the way to the final out.
Great views and stadium. I'm here until late summer, so will catch most of his home starts.

re: For the In-the-Know people, why did the Varsity in BR move away from live music?

Glenn balanced the the fine line between Art + Commerce by doing both -- making money and keeping a balanced and interesting calendar. Big difference from the eventual casino dude who would pass on bands like Stereolab for frick's sake.
Of course Chelsea's calendar is similar to the Spanish Moon when you have the same talent buyer. Not easy booking a venue that is destination only, so he's doing fine with the current climate from what I can observe from far away.

Nice photo from Fall Guy ... I am working with that director now and he was a giant stunt coordinator for many years. I know he's happy and it is overdue.

Varsity would easily be the top venue under the right leadership ... parking doesn't seem that bad these days, though I haven't lived in BR in over 20 years so maybe i'm wrong about that.
And good points King Bob ... I didn't think of it in those terms exactly.

It was more than that, but of course that was awesome. I hope that wasn't a dismissive "get off my lawn" type dig. I was reminiscing more about the supportive scene from the early nineties well into the early 2000's ... not prices and simpler times.

Who is/was a jerk and not really that good ... Probably for the best - what a listless and boring schedule he churned out.
The Varsity reopened my first year of college in 91' and had an incredible decade run under Glenn. So many big names came through (Public Enemy, DMB, Widespread, Pavement, White Zombie, Danzig, Ice T, Tori Amos, The Breeders, The Jayhawks, Wilco, Dwight Y, Lucinda Williams to name a few).
And they had fun parties to fill in the gaps ... just a different time where college kids drank and supported music ... they/we actually sought out music on the weekends, whether we knew them or not. At Chelsea's, the Bayou, The Spanish Moon. A real scene then.

8 episodes of 1hour plus TV on a distant location just takes time. That's basically like shooting 4 films. We shot for over 125 days (not counting weekends, travel or holidays). There were also weather delays, a few sick days etc. And Boat Work? With safety concerns, conditions and general logistics of getting to and on a boat .... ?
You need months to plan, dress and build the sets. You don't just show up at these hotels and roll camera. Plus, almost all of the interior villas were on stage in Bangkok .... large builds that take 10-12 weeks. That Buddha on the island? Custom sculpted and finished piece from our department that took 6-8 weeks to perfect. All of it seems simple, but with a crew of over 75 in a country that is a bit chaotic at times is not easy.
all of the B-Roll monkey shots, water shots ... all that was a 2nd Unit team that had nothing to do with the main unit and actors.
24 was made like 20 years ago and shot in LA when everything was made there ...... with likely 4 top camera units running simultaneously and a wide open checkbook from Fox. Different times and purse strings.

To answer a previous poster …. Season 4 location is a bit under wraps. I really don’t think they know yet, but scouting will start in a few months. Mike is taking time off and then will jump back in once the location is picked.
I spoke to someone high up and he told me he doesn’t expect to start until January of 26’, which means April of 27’ likely until the next one. It took us 6 months to shoot S3 and that doesn’t count several months of prep.
My best guess:
Scandinavia, Vienna, Holland or Paris
Start shooting Feb or April 26’ for 6 months
Editing/post for 5 or 6 months
Release spring 27’

It's a nice little stadium and filled in for USC's park in the film "Million Dollar Arm" with Jon Hamm.
