I enjoy the hell out of my job. I sit in front of a computer and pull takeoffs for construction projects and then submit bids to the GCs. A/C in the summer, heat in the winter and regular hours with a regular commute.
Throw in the annual fishing trips out to Montana/Idaho/Wyoming that the boss takes us on and what's not to love?
The biggest plus in this case, though, is that we all like each other pretty well and we're friends at work and outside of work. That part makes a HUGE difference in a workplace.

Retired now, but trucking in the 70s and 80s was a great job. Freedom of the road, mom and pop truckstops, light traffic, public still respected truckers. But from around 95 things changed. Cell phones and satellite communications took away the Freedom. Traffic became a nightmare, fellow drivers lost the camaraderie of the past, truckstops became cookie cutter, parking a nightmare. So early years, yes I enjoyed it.

I’m an optometrist and am self employed. It’s alright. Vision plans suck. When I wake up, I scramble to get to work, do paper work for 1.5 hours before I start seeing patients, then go home at 5:00 every day. I could work employed somewhere and cut back on the administrative work and stress, but would take a dramatic pay cut to do so. I need the money.

Software developer for DoW and Federal LE. I love it. But, I've been doing this for a while. Only have 8 more years and I'm retiring.

The golden triangle of jobs:
1) You like doing it
2) You get paid well to do it
3) You have work/life balance
Very few are lucky enough to get all three. You're honestly lucky if you get two.

It took me a while to get there but I'm there now.
Love what I do.

I don't like it, but I am a lawyer in my late 50s who will retire in two years. If you hate it at 40 I feel sorry for you. After 50 it gets harder.

I can’t stand my job and I’m self employed now. I chose a bad field that the work never stops, nobody wants to do it, but it’s undervalued because it is a cost rather than a revenue center, and the value you bring is hard to take credit for. Maybe a better way of putting it is the better you are at it, the less people see you do it. Like playing DB in football.

I’m living proof that you can be good at your job but not love it. And I too am a lawyer. Have been for 35 years.
The stuff about my job that I truly enjoy (like going to trial) happens so infrequently that I might as well cash out. But I like the people I work with and no longer get too stressed about anything.
Oh, and my wife has cancer, so I need the health insurance.

I hate otr trucking, but my employer is great. We've gotten $10k in raises this year and my 401k is set up for retirement. They make trucking worth tolerating.
