I have a very high level of cultural knowlege and score extremely well on verbal tests (perfect SAT verbal) but below average math skills. I personally associate intelligence with mathematical ability
Quantitative reasoning is part of the broader Fluid-Reasoning, one of the highest contributors to overall intelligence. That being said, it is incorrect to equate math ability as the single representation of IQ. I'm sure some great writers, with high IQs but personal weaknesses in their quantitative reasoning, chose a field that highlighted their strengths and minimized their weaknesses.

Besides, Quantitative reasoning (patterns) aside, math is generally a skill not an ability. You may have just had a skill deficit in math. When a skill is low relative to one's ability and to one's peers (normatively), that has been the traditional conceptualization of a Specific Learning Disability.

I feel like this might go a long way in explaining all of your cringeworthy humble brags in this thread.

r/iamverysmart would love some of these.

being in gifted wasn't a big deal. i graduated (public school this time) with like 30-40 SPARK classmates

but the private school i went to didn't test for Gifted, so parents had to pay for the testing. that's not a brag

if you're in public school, they have a system wehre you don't have to go out of pocket. the difference was noted earlier in this thread (and not by me)

I scored a 153 and chart told me it is a high score. What does that mean? Did I break it?

If offered I would decline an invitation to join the Menses Club.

It would cramp my style and require sloughing, which I don't do well.

IQ level doesn't mean much. You can live a happy life and a good life and that is what matters most.

Be grateful for the life God gave you. And use that gratitude to bring love to others.

I know I am no where near that level. But I am still in the 97th percentile or so. As a result, my friends and coworkers often consider me the smartest person they know and, therefore, one of the smartest people on the planet. I tell them that I hope to God I am not one of the smartest people on the planet because otherwise we have no chance of sending a human to Mars, much less travelling to other star systems or even other galaxies. I know I am not smart enough to figure that out, so I am very grateful there are quite a few people way smarter than me.

If you're in the 97th percentile that means there are about 210,000,000 people on earth who currently have a higher IQ.

it's weird

i thought about that a lot last week when the poli board posted that report of the smartest presidents

we don't think of ourselves on that level but not much separates you or me from those guys in terms of IQ

there is so much more to "success"

our system isn't built as much to foster building exploration of the mind, which leads to the smart-lazy kids like me. those kids learn how to game the system to hit As but the skills developed are more playing games with the regulatory scheme of school and grading more than developing thought on advanced concepts

but when you look at really successful people, it's more about personality and timing luck. that's why most super rich people have a lot of overlap in terms of personality with psychopaths, and why the guy who reportedly has the highest IQ on earth is a bouncer in a bar who didn't graduate from college

And about 7 billion people with a lower IQ. Like I said, I am very grateful there are people way smarter than me because we would have never gotten off of the earth otherwise.

Yup, head injury + seizures caused by head injury + seizure meds reduced the speed which I can solve certain problems. I have to think about some things now, where before I didn't. It also caused bad memory problems and it didn't help that I already had ADD. Doesn't help at all with engineering curriculum. I pretty much forget what I'm doing on tests and my brain shuts off. It happens during every test.

I still have lots of practical knowledge and problem solving abilities, but iq-esque problems slow me down sometimes, and that is a large part of your score. It was pretty high before (165 average), and now it's just moderately high (140 as of two years ago). All of those tests were legit and were tacked onto other tests. I know how easy it was to look at a problem and solve it before, and it aggravates me that I take a while to do it now.

I agree with you. I have always placed learning as my top priority, so I do a lot more with what I am given than most. I know people smarter than me less successful than me and vice versa. Intelligence is just another tool for professional success along with social skills, likability, control over your emotions, etc.

I know exactly what bouncer you are talking about. I never could fully buy into that story. He apparently networked all these laptops and was studying theoretical physics in his spare time if memory serves. That always seemed like bullshite to me.

I scored really high on an "official" IQ test, but I'm not convinced they are the best measure of intelligence. They are very much pattern oriented, so if you're good at seeing/recognizing patterns you'll kick its arse. It also is very much geared towards making correct decisions very quickly, which has limited application to the real world in my opinion.

Intelligence is so much more than pattern recognition, my dad is probably about average, but he's fantastic with people and knows a shitton of trivia. I'd be surprised if he could do above college algebra, but he makes <100,000 and his industry makes it a point to use him as a frame of reference on matters.
