We often run out for quick things to the closest one. Make a left out of our neighborhood, and it is about 5 minutes away as you get into the country. Civilization is about 5 minutes to the right, but much more time in the parking lot, store, and checkout. They also have $5 of $25 coupons every Saturday and sometimes $10 off $40.

Only thing that sucks is that they got rid of self checkouts presumably due to “changing consumer habits”

I'll pay extra on everything then have to deal with the culture that shops at DG

We had an event at Madisonville and turned onto hwy 22 at Ponchatoula. We passed the first DG and my wife was upset I missed stopping there because she needed something.

I said heck it’s DG, there will be 2 more before we get there. And we did pass 2 more before we made it to Madisonville. On 18 miles of road there were 3 of them and that’s not to mention how many more were a couple miles off 22.

I wouldn't stop at a Family Dollar unless my life depended on it. Family Dollar shut several down for months in N La due to a rat problem in their warehouse a few years back.

or it can be used on the same principle as Target -- pay a little more to avoid WM.
This is EXACTLY why I use it anytime I can. If I can avoid going in WM or Kroger or wherever when I just need 1 or 2 things, I go to the DG Market up the road.

I can be in and out so much faster than the big stores.

They have 4 around me and the biggest “town” in the area is 2k

2 of them have to be getting picked apart by shoplifting
You can walk in there and not see any workers the whole time until you have to ring the bell to get them to check you out and then the door alarms don’t work

My wife is the only person I know who can spend an hour shopping in a DG

Iberia Parish is the Dollar General capital of the world. There are three within a span of 12 miles on Highway 14 heading west from New Iberia.

There are several in town

Minimalist.

Interesting theory, acting like an unprepared woman. No water stores until the hurricane is 48 hours out right?

Living 5 min from a DG is pretty trashy fwiw

In the rural south it’s impossible to not live 5 min from one

DG should make a deal with USPS to use the storefronts as a type of post office in very rural communities. A large reason the USPS loses so much money is servicing rural areas with low mail volume. Just make a corner of the local DG a post office station with P.O. Boxes and do away with mail delivery to rural homes. USPS pays a small fee to DG to do it and DG gets more foot traffic

Lots of downvotes but I agree. Generally they're not cheap, they're a convenience store with convenience store pricing for most things.
I'm a snowbird and cape cod summer home I don't even know where the closest DG is. Probably Hyannis which is 40 min away. No go

Florida there is one about 5 minutes away and I've been once in the past three years for a birthday card. Specifically.

If it's all that's around, I get it, but if you've got other options, they are probably better

No problem with a DG. They give places like Venice La a legit “store” at which to shop. If they weren’t filling a need, they wouldn’t exist.

I feel sorry for these people when I see them. Nice, helpful, hardworking people stuck as being a wage slave. I'd rather them be the typical nasty people so I dont feel sorry for them.

This lady was older and gave off the "I am just doing this to have something to do" vibe.. Maybe not.. It might have just been that it wasn't busy at all at the time, but I get what you are saying.

I don’t have anything against Dollar General, but I’m pretty sure it’s been at least 5 years or more since I had the need to go in one. And, if I remember correctly, the last time I did was because we had taken our camper up to Guntersville and Dollar General was the closest store.

That’s just objectively false. If you’re buying items commonly bought at convenience stores like individual candy bars, soft drinks, cigarettes, and the like, yes, prices are comparable to convenience stores. You could argue the same about Walmart.

For many in a small town, a DG is the only place to buy groceries. It really does serve a purpose.

The one in Georgetown is the cleanest I have ever seen

Their generic brands are as cheap as walmart

Their generic version of brawny paper towels are like $5 for a 6 pack and just as good

Generic meds also cheap
