NTA, but not without blame either. The whole mess was a direct result of something very simple that you did not do.

BS. One of the main points of registration is collecting information that can be used to contact patients regarding their bills. Front desk staff are typically paid to do this & follow up with patients, unless you're in a big enough system to have a dedicated billing/collections unit of your own.
They have phone #s, email, and typically emergency contacts that all would have sufficed.

I know, because I worked medical collections fresh out of college

These guys were just lazy MFers, they didn't even have the patient file straight to begin with. I guarantee if you were to audit the account notes, there would be 0 phone call attempts and little to no record of notices being sent.

Nothing you said made you look like an a-hole. My only guess is you got heightened and aggressive when you were talking to them. They probably got defensive which made you get more heightened. The cycle continued.

I would tell the doctor they said they wouldn't miss you if you left. I'd fire an employee for saying that to a customer.

No. In fact i would have gone further. if this was a small business and not a big chain eye doctor and you have been a long standing patient, i would have demanded to speak to the owner personally and give him a piece of my mind.

I had a gastroenterologists' office do that to me once. They missed billing for a procedure and then, about a year later attempted to file an insurance claim. It was denied because it was too old.

They send the bill to collections, and I was notified by a collection agency while on a work trip.

When I got back into town, I went to the Dr's office and asked to speak with the bookkeeper. When she came into the waiting room, i really lit into her ensuring that everyone in the room heard and knew what they had done.

I never received another collections or payment request from the Dr.

I hasten to add that this is very much against my usual personality; just needed some way to make a point.

You were not the A-hole at all. They should have called or at least alerted you when you called for the appointment.

How was your blood pressure that visit?

Medical billing is one of the worst run fields in the country. Whenever I get a bill from the hospital I literally do not pay it until it’s about to go to collections. 9/10 times the bill is a frick up on part of the medical billing dept

Just use a Hospital ER as your primary care doctor like millions of Illegal Immigrants do.

And then immediately lead a work meeting then had to drive 2 hours through DMV traffic right after.

I had a lot of margaritas last night.

Lab Corp threatened to send me to collections after I told them on 4 different occasions that I was not paying the bill because I was appealing the denial with my insurance company. Every time I would call them they would tell me that they would put a hold on my account so the letters in the mail should stop. And every time the letters kept coming.

The insurance company reversed their decision after my appeal and paid the claim. They paid Lab Corp $3, Lab Corp was coming after me for $591. Their letters were absurd, the last one said “there is no excuse not to pay this bill”, they probably get some old or uneducated people with their strongly worded letters.

It should be illegal for healthcare related companies to use Indian call centers.

I’ve found over the past couple years a rapid increase of rude and incompetent receptionists at doctors offices

They’ve always been stupid, but you’re right. I’m sure it correlates strongly with the rapid increase in rude and incompetent members of the general public.

Healthcare system in this country is a complete money scam.

What’s the alternative? Won’t socialized healthcare be worse?

Medical offices like this are so much for to go into as a consultant. You can make the business better, improve patient satisfaction, and cut out the bullshite.

I hope you let the doctor know how his front office staff acts.
and also informed him that you’re looking for a new eye doctor.
I sure would have.
Hopefully, those arrogant bitches would lose their job.
And I’m serious.
