‘Going to college ruined my life.’ I have $85K in student loan debt with a useless degree

Welp .... here we go.
I feel like I'm throwing stereotypic millennials to the lions with this, but I have to SMH.

I would give anything to go back and not go to college at all. It wasn’t worth it.
I am 32 and got my associates degree in occupational therapy. I owe $25,000 in federal student loans, and $60,000 in private loans with high interest — despite having my mom as a co-signer. I went to a great college: It was private and costly, but I have learning challenges they were able to accommodate. But I will never forget back in the beginning of 2018, my professors told me that by the time my classmates and I graduated, we would likely struggle to get jobs because of changes in the profession. Well, they were right. And of course after I took out these huge loans, it was too late to fix it.
I graduated, the pandemic hit, jobs were scarce, and despite looking and applying for whatever I could for almost two years, it didn’t matter. So now I’m going on eight years at my job in a group home where I’m paid $16 an hour. I work over 50 hours a week sometimes, and also support a severely disabled adult who is 100% financially dependent on me. I’m barely making it paycheck to paycheck as it is.
I feel like I will never be able to afford my payments, even if I find higher-paying work. I feel like I have a useless degree at this point. I would give anything to go back and not go to college at all. It wasn’t worth it. My credit score plummeted from missing one payment, and I already have a mountain of other bills I owe to credit cards and medical bills. I literally am trapped by these loans. I have no payment options that would ever pay them off and refinancing is not an option because my credit score is so low.

I didn't make the best financial decisions in my 20s, but 85K for an Associate's? WTF

This is a legitimate sorry for partying meme.

Imagine those with gender studies degrees. 100K in debt just so you can stock shelves ( with purple hair) at Walmart.

I watched a show a couple years back that this far left lib took out $200K for a degree that had no job for. I blame the idiots for getting the degree but also the university for having classes like this.
But reality sucks and this is what they chose.

Well did you at least get laid ?

Why spend that kind of money on an associate's degree?

Start by realizing that A) Those of us that took out our own loans and paid them off are NOT frickING INTERESTED in paying off yours for you, and B) neither are those people who decided not to go to college at all and started working right out of high school while you fricked around for four years getting your useless degree.
That said, good luck to you.

Did they ever catch the guy holding a gun to his head to make him take the loan?

Aren't most associate's degrees, 2-year degrees?
If they took 15 hours per semester, then that would be a total of 60 credit hours...for 85K. That works out to $1416 per credit hour. Of course, room and board could be a factor in that.

How is that even possible? I mean…. How? How the frick do you spend that much for a two year degree?
Did they live in a suite at the Hilton and order room service for all meals while there?

Let's list the specific points of failure:
1. Associates Degree in Occupational Therapy
2. Owing ~$85k for an Associates Degree... in Occupational Therapy
3. The college was "private and costly"
4. "Learning challenges" that only this expensive college was able to "accommodate"? Unlikely (unless the "learning challenge" is "fiscal responsibility")
5. Her professor told her and her classmates that they would struggle to find a job with their degrees
And whose fault was that? Was it the fault of the taxpayers whose money she used to get her worthless degree for a ridiculously high sum of money?
It sucks to be her but none of this is why student loan debt should be forgiven. She (and others like her) should be held up as why people should avoid shite degrees and ridiculously expensive colleges.

People will max out student aid even if they dont need it. The university's bursar office will cut a check to the student for any aid received that is larger than your tuition bill.

Gotta have daily visit to Starbucks and ordering grub hub while “studying”. This person took out loans to live and now realizes they lived it up too much. On top of that, they don’t make enough with their worthless degree to pay it off.

Someone suggested the universities should become cosigners on the loans.
This would cure a lot of problems with universities as well.

The key to the entire story is she took out 60k in private loans.
You get private loans as a last resort, or to literally fund your lifestyle as a college kid.
