I know several people from college that towards the end of college developed pretty severe personality disorders, which is when those things often materialize.

It's fascinating and sad. A couple of them can't care for themselves really and have been in rehab/homes/living with parents/etc.

One girl (now woman I guess) is always on social media acting like Britney Spears (crazy old Britney).

The guys I know had their situation escalated by serious drug use, but they were always guys who did drugs in college and seemed fine. Then it sped up their dormant mental illness and it went downhill...fast.

The girl I mentioned barely drank and was a straight A student. That one is way more sad to me. Lives with her retired parents at some remote lake house, where I think they moved to hide her from the world so she didn't injure herself or get in a bad situation with law enforcement.

Yes, some of my in-laws ... not joking. One was committed to a VA medical center and the other should be but won't seek care and cannot be forced into it unless he harms someone. For that reason they're not welcome in our home.

Related PSA: if any of you or your kids contemplate marrying someone who's adopted, get them to find out as much as they can about their biological family before they do; particularly if they plan to have kids because some of these things are hereditary and can skip a generation.

My girlfriend was adopted from an orphanage in Siberia. Not sure how much I am going to be able to find out.

My MIL has Borderline Personality Disorder. It is insane the shite she put her daughters through. After many years, I finally had it drilled into my wife's head that no matter what she did...No matter how many times she bailed he mother out of a terrible situation...No matter how many times she tried to help her mother out with this or that, she was NOT going to change her behavior.

She saw me be a bit harsh with her and not give in to the manipulative BS her mother would try a couple times before she got the courage up to do the same. She now sees her for what she is and has to have an arm's length relationship with her. Her two other sisters haven't escaped her psychotic grip and I feel bad for them.

Yep. Same thing happened with a friend of mine I had known since middle school.

Near the end of college he started acting a little strangely. A few years later, he was still more or less normal but into weird business ideas (pyramid schemes, etc.). Then he got weirder (saying and sharing inappropriate things, more schemes, bizarre ideas, etc.). Most of our common friends intentionally kind of shied away from him, not inviting him to get togethers, parties and such. One of my buds who worked in a bookstore would go hide in the stockroom if he saw the wacko guy come in, and wait until he left before leaving the stockroom.

I still had a little contact with him, only when he initiated it (called me up, etc.) When the internet and online stuff came into being, he was on it like white on rice; and when I looked at his postings and websites online, it was even wilder schemes and ideas (conspiracy theories; trying to get funding for developing space planes; HE was the one who came up with Ocean's 12 sequel and people owed him money for it; the government was "after him"). He was still living with his folks at this time around when he was in his 30s.

Another friend told me that he had been diagnosed with some kind of mental illness and was supposed to be on meds, but did not take them as he should. The final straw for me cutting off all contact came when I read a newspaper report about an incident with the cops at his parents' house (I think THEY called the cops on him) and when I saw another news report (St. Charles Parish paper) that he had been arrested for cyber stalking minors online. I didn't want to have ANYTHING to do with him after that.

It's a shame; he was a really bright, fun, intelligent guy and a great friend up till then.

In undergrad, there was a girl in a class that started emailing all the news stations, and record companies for some reason, saying that the professor was a cannibal and that she and the rest of the students were running a chicken fighting ring where they gambled and would not let her take part.

They told her she had to get an evaluation before she could come back to class. She never showed back up.

Yup. Unfortunately it happens all the time. Different triggers

Growing up, some friends of my family had the wife and mother pass away while the kids were still in school. It turned out she was the linchpin holding everything together.

The dad quit his high paying job so he could take up drinking beer and smoking pot as a career. He also stopped parenting, so the kids went nuts.
