Thread made me think of my parents, who bought the house of my childhood in 1956. Paid $9,000. Zillow says it's current estimated value is $1,840,00.

Bought in January '86
Built in '76 or '77
3 beds, 2 baths, 1730 sq ft
$65,000
Thought we were doing good, because we got a "low" interest rate for first time buyers of 9.95%

2009, $129,500. Bulit in 1987 1150 sq ft and last I looked the estimated value is about $175,000. It is a good little 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in a good area in Lafayette.

Most will find this very hard to believe but I swear it's absolutely true.
First house I bought was the old single shotgun on a narrow lot in the Lower 9th Ward I bought in 74 for a grand total of $9,200. It had 5 rooms and a bath with a small utility shed attached to the rear with a shed that ran across the width of the lot at the very back of the yard.
I did my own repair work, kept it for 5 years and sold it for $32K to the first people who looked at it.
Edited to add this: Current house in Mid-City N.O. bought in 92 for $54K. Two story and roughly 3200 sq. ft. that I did just about all the repair and upgrade work on it over the years.
Current market value unknown but comps are selling in the low to mid $400K range.

First house, purchased around 1989
1244 square feet
3br, 2ba
$75,000 at a mortgage interest rate of 10%+
I see it's currently estimated at $234,000.
