Read a lot of bad books in high school, the worst was easily Cry The Beloved Country. Old African priest aimlessly wanders around the continent looking for his son. Finds his son locked up jail for robbing and killing some white guy. Son gets the death penalty. Son is killed. Old priest cries

I generally enjoyed most of the books we were assigned but The Bean Trees sticks out in my mind as sucking badly. Wasn't even a long book and I just gave up on it. Completely pointless.

We really are dumbing the country down. Some of these are tough reads to enlarge your command of the language and expand your intelligence. Chaucer for a kid in what is now middle school was racy stuff. Dickens and Hardy were slogs for sure but expanded your range and vocabulary. Shakespeare wrote tragedies so you could appreciate the comedies. Now Hollywood spins out formula with unrealistic happy endings to sell tickets. No wonder we have gotten so soft as a country. While not all were perfectly written most offered direct glimpses into real human nature under the guise of fiction. No wonder China will overtake us in your lifetimes.

Ironically, Shakespeare was the pop culture of the day. It wasn't highbrow at all. Performances were raucous affairs. If the audience didn't like the play, they would frequently riot.

Not a book, but we had to read the play "Oedipus Rex." It was terrible.
