In high school I read The Catcher in the Rye and hated it.
Now several decades later as an adult with a lot more experience and a different outlook on life I read it again, and I still hate The Catcher in the Rye.

I agree with this, completely. I read it while in college, and read it a couple times over just to be certain. It was never assigned to me, but I read it because it was everywhere and all I learned of it beforehand was that it was great, a classic.
As juvenile as it may seem, I only enjoyed, or even remember, the part where "old Edgar Marsala" cut the big fart.

On Walden Pond. Hated it. Read 5 sci fi novels while I supposed to be reading Thoreau. Got a D on the test, but worth it not to have to finish that crap.

I loved the Iliad for people picking Homer. Particularly the opening lines. I have a minor in Greek literature though so maybe that makes sense.
