They stayed for a category 4 hurricane, did they think it was going to be comfortable?
There are always some people who arent staying fully by choice. Be it transportation out or medical conditions, or not having the money for a hotel and no other place to stay.
You feel for those people and its another reason you want people with the means to get out. So you can better focus resources to those who couldn't.

We are basically at 48 hours out at this point. And the number of people I see on facebook freaking out about needing ice, food, water, gas, etc is insane. They are of course all blaming the government, FEMA sucks, etc.
Welcome to the USA, 2021.
Self responsibility is no longer a thing.

I remember a thread a few years ago about how people prepared for hurricanes and there were a bunch of baws that would just get beer and a case of water.
Meanwhile, a tropical storm hit MS when I lived in New Orleans and I had a pantry full of dry goods, endless water/beer, and I filled basically everything I could with water (tub/pitchers/etc).

There are some people in terrible situations right now, who needed to be rescued off of a rooftop, who had their house collapse, etc... and getting to them should be the priority.
If you can't make it 48 hours without being self-sufficient, it's a big problem.
Yep.
If you can't handle that, GTFO. If you can't GTFO, better be able to handle it.

In full disclosure, I'm posing this from my hotel room in Texas where we evacuated to.
Everyone says that if you ride out a storm, you need to be prepared to be "on your own" for 72 hours.
We are basically at 48 hours out at this point. And the number of people I see on facebook freaking out about needing ice, food, water, gas, etc is insane. They are of course all blaming the government, FEMA sucks, etc.
I even saw one post where a guy said retail stores should have their "licenses revoked" if they don't have a generator to operate and are back running 24 hours after a storm passed.

It's almost like creating a culture of reliance on a government entity to cover your arse leaves folks unable to adequately take care of themselves when difficulty comes.

If you stay you're on your own. Plain and simple. People these days always want to place blame on others instead of looking in the mirror. I stayed and have enough food and supplies for a week. My plan is to leave since we are probably looking at 2 weeks of no power.

I agree with this to an extent, but I think it's also because people don't trust a company like Cox to get their services back at a reasonable time and start to panic.
It's also, as you touched on, this entitled culture of blaming others and that technology has given people a sense that anything they can get quickly, so when that technology goes down, they start to panic for this reason too. All of a sudden, people can't order Grubhub or buy things on Amazon to be shipped to their front door in 2 days.

My wife had to go back to work today, and once I helped get some tress cleaned up from my parents house I went to check on my shop across town. Central to St. George.
The biggest thing I can say is for people to try and calm down, be ready for everything to take longer, and have Patience!! Saw 2 wrecks, and tempers starting to flare up.
Know some are already at their whits end, and there is a long way to go..

Yeah, and COVID doesn't help either. You have the pandemic and then you have a storm knocking out services, and it's easier to see why some people blow a gasket.

Yes sir, hell if you could prep enough to survive a month you'd probably be good since most of the population would have died.

The elderly and disabled should have family to help. IF they don't that's another issue with our society.
The poor... it's an issue.

Self-reliance is something that is lost in the US today. There are people who call the police if they see a snake in their carport and there are people that call an ambulance for a toothache.
It's sad really.

People are pretty useless and always looking for someone to blame these days. It just goes to show you how truly fricked the majority of the population would really be when, as if, the zombie apocalypse really does hit.

Very few people have absolutely no one. I asked all the elderly & disabled people I know if they needed supplies when I went shopping last Weds/Thurs. I’ve checked on all of them since - all of them also have families.
As for the ‘poor’ people - if they are really poor - then they have enough food stamps to get supplies for a few days. They should be used to living on the fringe. Plus, they could’ve gone to a shelter.
Your emotive response is useless.

Apparently the fast food lines were 20+ cars deep as early as yesterday. I don’t get this. Everyone ransacked the grocery stores 3 days ago and got shelf stable foods, plus most people own a grill. I get being sick of that and wanting FF multiple days in, but within 24 hours of the storm you’re waiting an hour for a burger? I get going somewhere sit-down for AC but the hour long drive through on day 1 is lost on me.
My parents were at the grocery store earlier buying dog food, lol. Like.. what?
I have seen several folks trying to buy generators or who tried to leave town in the middle of the storm Sunday because of no power. I can’t think of a worse time to try to buy a generator or try to leave town and find hotels. If you know you can’t handle no AC, you need to plan ahead.

It really is pathetic. I chose to ride out a bad hurricane that paralyzed the area for a few weeks, though only power, not so much building destruction. I had just moved there from Iowa.
I was ill prepared for the aftermath. No gas to drive out of the area. No food. No bottled water. I made my way to a Publix, got some water and beef jerky and chips and water and subsisted for 4 days before my friend could get in by vehicle on a rescue mission. Luckily, the temps dropped and it was cool, but I read a lot and a relaxing time. Neighbors grilled up what they had first few days. Warm beers. It wasn’t all bad.

We did do this, but gas is very hard to come by right now in LP. 8 cans are now nearly empty. And I don't want to use too much gas driving around fruitlessly in my car in case I need to get to Lafayette, which we may be doing tomorrow.
You don’t have to run your generator around the clock shithead. Run it long enough to keep your food preserved. You don’t have to run AC and television to survive. I have no sympathy for you. A frickin category 4 storm just demolished a couple thousand people’s lives forever and you are inconvenienced by not having power 24/7. No one is entitled to comfort.
Disclaimer: also in LP and also without power and water. Been working on homes all day yesterday and today and burned 4 gallons of gas keeping my freezers cold last night and running a small AC to cool the room we are sleeping in. Kids have been playing cards and picking up sticks in the daytime.
8 frickin cans of gas. I could make that last a month.

Yeah, every other post on the crisis response FB thread was people posting their cash app for money for food, water, gas, etc. Like damn, I was young and broke once too, but I was never ‘create a fundraiser for myself online every time I can think of an excuse’ broke.
