We just bought a house. We are stretched as far as we can possibly go without cutting into emergency stuff which I am not doing. We are a young couple in our first house. I appreciate the advice but paying someone thousands to do this simply isn’t an option. The money to do that does not exist.
We’ve all been there. You are going to purchase $100 worth of tools to do it yourself. It may still be worth it for you to take $50 and whatever meat you can part with from your freezer, and a case of Budweiser to your nearest job site and find a Pedro that wants can knock it out in an hour after he leaves another job site.

People say plenty of bad things about me, some of it is true, but no one will ever look at the trash in my truck or boat and accuse me of littering.

If all else fails just get 3 of them. If one isn’t good toss it and try the next. Life’s too short to eat sub par watermelon.

I would drive my FIL to the dealer immediately if he was thinking about buying one with a mulcher.

re: First Turkey Call

Get a lynch fool proof box call and whatever glass call that fits your budget. You will have everything you need to kill a turkey. Might get a crow call too so that you can use it to make one gobble while you get as close as possible to setup on him.
Buy a variety pack of diaphragm calls and put them in your truck to practice with. You’ll probably find out that a certain cut fits your wind pattern better. Keep that one and throw the rest out of the window. Learn to make simple sounds on a mouth call. Clean clucks and 3-4 note yelps. You can use these when a turkey is close and you can’t get to your other calls without spooking him.
Record yourself outside and listen to the recordings. It sounds different outside and 20 yards away than in the truck or house.

Call his doctor. They might keep extra for when someone’s insurance is slow to approve a drug.
re: Buying tires online
Posted by tenfoe on 3/9/25 at 5:58 pm
I always just get a price online and call a couple tire shops to see if they’ll match the price. Someone always does. Then I use them to mount and balance.
re: Skills you are good at vs not good at
Posted by tenfoe on 3/9/25 at 3:51 pm
Always been very good at being able to kill or catch just about anything. Also been very good at being able to take said dead critter and make a fine meal with it.
Never been able to do anything with music. Have owned 3-4 pawn shop guitars and same amount of instructional videos through the years. Can’t play a chord.
Through the years have been able to pick up quite a few handyman skills. Can hang and finish Sheetrock, do simple residential electrical and plumbing, and can work on small engines and fix simple issues.
Can’t cut crown molding to save my life. Will screw up 4 times just to get a piece to match, and still usually need at least a medium caulk job to hide my cut.

the weight savings going from 20 to 410 are even greater than going from 12 to 20 (depending on guns).
If we are talking about children, a 410 is ok but it still has much more limitations than a 20. You are correct it’s adequate, but so is eating steaks from a door to door salesman and no one here is going to choose that over Ruth’s Chris.
Most 20 gauges weigh about 7lbs. The 410s weigh 5. Sacrificing hundreds of pellets for 2 lbs for an able bodied male is retarded. For a female or child I can understand.

I clean them where they fall unless I'm pretty close to my truck. It's quicker than dragging, cleaning, then disposing carcass.
This is the way. I switched to this pretty much exclusively about 10-15 years ago. I never go into the woods without 3 trash can (35 gallon) liners to tote deboned meat out in. Even on a buck you can debone and get it all out in one trip. Might have to carry a bag or two of meat in your hands, but it saves hours.
re: Is there a such thing as skidsteer skill training courses?
Posted by tenfoe on 2/11/25 at 3:24 pm
More time in the seat is better training than anything.
Also, there’s a huge difference between a good operator and a great operator. Being able to see grade, be light to the touch when needed, knowing what the machine can and can’t do, etc are things you aren’t going learn in a class.

With modern TSS a 12ga is overkill for turkeys. Many will be killed this year by grown men with single shot 410
He said it would be used for other things too. Maybe he just wants to buy one shotgun, and is set on it being a 12?
OP, I have the SX4 and it’s a nice shotgun. I wish I had the A400, as I hear it’s unbelievable at throwing out light loads. I’ve had minimal problems with the SX4 throwing out light loads, but it does happen

re: Anybody ever hear of old bucks using younger bucks as cannon fodder
Posted by tenfoe on 1/23/25 at 12:12 pm
If you really think mature deer purposely let young deer walk in to an area of potential danger to observe if a threat is apparent prior to the grown deer entering the area you have lost your mind. Older animals of all species are more cautious, younger ones are generally stupid. I swear you try to make deer and turkeys some kind of mythical creatures that are consistently outsmarting humans on purpose. Then the deer go back to a common area and discuss their success with their deer friends, right? This way they are constantly sharing information.
I’m sorry you are constantly getting your asskicked by deer and turkeys. I hope your luck turns around.
Or maybe you are more of a golfer?
