In full disclosure, I'm posing this from my hotel room in Texas where we evacuated to.
Everyone says that if you ride out a storm, you need to be prepared to be "on your own" for 72 hours.
We are basically at 48 hours out at this point. And the number of people I see on facebook freaking out about needing ice, food, water, gas, etc is insane. They are of course all blaming the government, FEMA sucks, etc.
I even saw one post where a guy said retail stores should have their "licenses revoked" if they don't have a generator to operate and are back running 24 hours after a storm passed.
There are some people in terrible situations right now, who needed to be rescued off of a rooftop, who had their house collapse, etc... and getting to them should be the priority.
If you can't make it 48 hours without being self-sufficient, it's a big problem.
It blows my mind how some people are not prepared. I gave a buddy of mine a generator as a wedding gift 14 or 15 years ago. I had a generator within a few weeks of me moving to Louisiana 10 years ago along with a window unit and another ac on wheels that you vent out of a window.

shite man I bought my spam just because it was august first. My only issue is my old dog pissed herself barking at people walking while I was at work.

Easy to heat up to. Leave the metal can on the hot fricking concrete and in a few hours bon appetite.
$20 and you can eat for two weeks if need be.
Exactly. I realize this isn’t ideal eating, but the amount of people in areas that fared fine damage wise acting like they’re literally starving to death is comical.

You don't NEED ice or gas like you do food or water....and I bet they have plenty of food, just not the right kind
Water I'll give ya...but if you don't have a case of water going into a storm like this you're a dumbass
Eta - I will add baby formula as a necessity. That could be life or death situation either for the kid or the parent

this is really the only thing that i will excuse but damn it...evac
and i dont want to hear about poor people and not being able too. These are the same people that were told growing up to pay attention in school if they didnt want to grow up and be poor. They made their decisions and need to learn to live with it. frick em.
I hate to be like that but its bullshite, people need to learn to help themselves. Its not that hard or expensive to fill up a bunch of gallon jugs with drinking water from the sink before a storm. not that hard to freeze gallon jugs before hand to keep the freezer cold longer.
not that expensive to get canned goods. 99% of people have some type of grill at home, not that hard or expensive to stock up on charcoal or propane.
i dont want to hear about not having money for a generator while they walk around with a 1000 dollar iphone and have a 55" tv hanging in the living room. we all make choices in life and you have to learn will dealing with incorrect ones.
as far as gas...not that hard to get 15-20 gallons ahead of time and the generator really only needs to be running at night and honestly really only has to be running the fridge and electronics and a fan.
i dont wanna hear about no ac. A) get over it. B) should have prepared and bought a stand alone one or a window unit.
people need to learn, after cleaning everything up, to sit their fat asses on the back porch or balcony in a rocking chair and read a damn book or to play catch with their kids or other easy things to pass the time.
this isnt the end of the world. People did the same shite after laura and pissed me off. just grill and cook everything out the freezer and fricking chill.

Always have at least two weeks worth of stuff and gear to make it through.

I wonder if he would volunteer to go work at said store????

I've always said that 5 days without running water is pretty much when TSHTF.
By that time anyone that stayed that has the means to go somewhere cool and with running water will do so.
That leaves the people that have no means and after 5 days is when they go into "don't give a frick" mode. I think we will start to see this in Orleans, Jefferson, Terrebonne, etc if they don't have some pretty consistent water flow by tomorrow or Friday.

As for the generator thing, not having one is whatever.. I only just got one last year and it kinda fell into our hands.. But the decision to run around like a mad person trying to buy one DURING the post-hurricane drama is insane to me. If I lost power and didn't have one, I feel like I'd be like "Welp, that was on me for not having one. I'll buy one this year before next hurricane season comes".
And if I was miserable, I'd go find a place to stay. The last thing I'd be doing is waiting at hardware stores for deliveries and sitting in hour long gas station lines because I didn't prepare.

I guarantee you at least 50% of the people I just saw in the 20-car line at McDonalds (and the people who were standing outside of Canes at 9:30 waiting for it to open) have food. I'm slightly more understanding now that we are 3 days out and people might just want normalcy away from canned tuna and crackers, but only slightly.

This is what I said too. Again, this far out I'm more understanding since ice melts and is hard to find right now.. But sorry there shouldn't have been the insanity at FF restaurants there was less than 24 hours out from the storm. You don't have anything in your freezer you could throw on the grill? That's absurd.
All I know is when the end of times come, I'm much more ready to survive than I thought if this is what I'm competing with.

I'll be out of gas for the generator some time today, only running a fridge, freezer, and a box fan (plus phone chargers when needed)
So far it runs for 2 hours in the morning when we wake up and then 4 hours before we get close to bed. Haven't had power since Sunday about 7pm.
So far eating a lot of PB&J, chips, and cooking out the freezer on the stove (gas) or grill.

Oh look, another circle jerk thread by someone who is doing ZERO hours "on his own"!
I've seen no one freaking out. Seen a lot of "Go here to get this, lines are better here," things like that.
Maybe you just have crappy friends or live in a crappy area.
