Only thing I can think of is that they are birders. Landfills attract a lot of different birds, and they are easy to photograph and observe there.
fricking bird nerds. Hope it was all worth it just to add to their Life List on Merlin Bird ID.

Where do you get your information? From what I read, there is at least week long latency period.

The potential incubation period from exposure to onset of symptoms was 7–39 days (median 18 days) in 20 patients with a defined period of exposure to Andes virus in a high-risk area. This period was 14–32 days (median 18 days) in 11 patients with exposure for <48 hours.

Will be interesting to see what research comes out of this strain to see how it potentially spread human to human.
About 2 years ago I was doing a deep dive in hanta after I cleaned out my MIL chicken coop that had been invaded by a rat. I realized after about 15 minutes in I didn't have any breathing protection and was knocking old rat droppings in the air. Not a mistake I will make again cleaning out that coop after reading about hantas mortality rate. Thankfully MIL lives in South Carolina and hanta is not widely reported in the southeast, the most frequent cases are found in the southwest where deer mouse are more prevalent.

How was that even allowed to happen?
This is a very long cruise. Not everyone travels the entire cruise. Some people get off at ports and fly back home.
The 2 passengers got off and flew back home before back home before it was confirmed to be hantavirus.

Looks like I was correct.

First symptoms were noted 4 days after the cruise started, and only 2 days after the landfill excursion. The deaths started only 10 days after the cruise started
Im not saying the normal intubation period isn’t 7-39 days, but clearly for this strain it’s happening much faster
Symptoms are happening mere days after exposure and death within a week
