UPDATE: Fractured C1 and C4 vertebrae
Jeremiah Williams is on a ventilator this morning at UMC.
I don’t know anything about injuries to the spine, is this something he can completely recover from?
Regarding spinal cord injury, the lesion is either complete or incomplete.
If I recall correctly, Christopher Reeve had an incomplete C4. As others have stated, C4 innervates the diaphragm.
In one of his last TV interviews (Barbara Walters?), he spoke about his recovery, and how he had progressed to being able to spend more and more time off of mechanical ventilation, because he still had some/improving C4 function.
I don't think he ever achieved much more than only rare, trace movement of his extremities.
After all of the most intense inpatient rehab and home health care, that's where he was, functionally.
This kid has a C4 and a C1 (brain stem, autonomic nervous system injury).
Very long road for him. Will need every prayer he can get.
anc, keep us posted.

I'm just going by what we get told. We aren't allowed to leave the game unless we have to transport a player. Even then, if it's not too critical we will call a 2nd ambulance to come in and take them while we stay. If we have to transport we will send another to the game till we get back. We usually never have to transport though. I have no idea if what our administrators tell us is fact, but they say it's required, for ambulances to be there.

It's poor tackling technique. Do they even teach proper technique any more.
This 100,000 times. The answer is NO NO NO. Proper tackling is not taught. Just watch the game today. LSU, and most others don't know how to tackle properly. Watch the long running gains on LSU today due to improper/failure/poor tackling.
Up voted once. Wish I could have up vote 1000 times.

Can’t really do a proper ASIA evaluation until spinal shock runs its course. We have the vertebral fracture levels. I guess the question is to what extent is the spinal cord injured at these levels.

In high school? You're lucky if you can get them to tackle properly even if you teach it.
Very sad.

Some parish school boards and municipalities that own stadiums have hat rule ..not statewide

It gets taught. Kids don't always do what they are taught

Plus, considering the thousands or millions of tackles made across the country every Friday night, there are probably very few serious injurious bc the vast majority of tackles aren’t made with the head down. And some tacklers don’t intend to go head down. Not done on purpose.

This is so tragic that this happened to a young man with so much of his life in front of him. May he, and his loved ones, be comforted as much as possible.

ThTs brutal. Prayers for him and his family

Generally speaking it is taught at a young age on up. The NFL has a huge outreach program for youth football specifically for tackling technique. But like anything else, a lot depends on the dad or goof ball coaches out there who may not take it seriously enough or might not know wtf they’re doing.

It's absolutely taught. My son was defensive tackle from 1st grade thru Sr yr & our coaches in LOSA (Live Oak Sports Asso) were teaching him head up, wrap up on tackle and wrestle down. However, freak accidents happen. I mentioned earlier that during his Sr year in 2017 there were 2 players paralyzed. One was Michael Doherty during playoffs while playing defensive back for St. Paul (Covington). He was in great position with head up going for a tackle and as his teammate tackled the player that guy was pushed into Michael.
His head snapped back and he suffered a C5 break. Being that we were also in the playoffs and I was the mom of a DT this story really hit me hard. I have followed his progress through his Facebook and he is doing much better than I could have imagined. I think he graduated in May & was starting LSU this Fall.
Sometimes freak accidents happen (not saying this wasnt poor technique last night bc I have no knowledge of that).

C1 injury is right at the brain stem which housed your autonomic respiratory center, injury to spinal cord at the C1 (partial vs. complete) shuts down your ability to breathe and most if not all neuro functions below that level.
Neurosurgeons sometimes refer to this injury akin to a decapitation... most people do not survive unless they are intubated and ventilated immediately.

A couple years ago, I can remember a football game we were attending, in NOla at Tad Gormley, I BELIEVE, the ambulance had to leave to answer a call.
The game was held until another arrived.
I may be wrong on the circumstances, but it was a B.M. game.

im in mississippi, and have been to 7 or 8 3a games this yr. And for some reason i make an effort to always look to see where emergency personnel are (dont ask me why, i just do) and i remeber seeing one ambulance total at all those games.
