You may want to actually read what you posted, specifically the methodology.

In Baltimore they call it juking the stats.

If you want to question the methodology involved, I'll allow it. Be advised I studied statistics in a Ph.D. program, but if you can intelligently discuss this I will too.

So far everyone else has just been randomly downvoting and yammering about this or that based on how they feel.

100k per year is still absolutely a crisis in a country with welfare and income tax.

Were you complaining when it was 800k a year? If not, why not?

And it's been more than ten years since then. So far, we still have a country right?
Some of you have argued that we can't possibly know this. Well, I've found this document on the Department of Homeland Security's website that goes into detail on how they come up with the numbers.

According to this DHS document, the number of illegal border crossings on the Southwest border has dropped from over 800k in 2006 to less than 100k in 2016.

This document was provided to Congress as directed by law. Maybe this is why Congress doesn't think a wall is needed - DHS told them the numbers have plummeted. Not sure why some people are suddenly so concerned when they weren't in 2006.

Between equipment, airfare, and whatnot, I spent about $7k on a trip to climb Kilimanjaro and a one week safari.

Well worth it.

None of that matters unless an election was decided by a smaller margin.

There's no doubt that some voting fraud takes place, but in the grand scheme of things this isn't a huge deal.

If you're trying to learn how to do better than the pros in your spare time, you can't.

I was affected in a very good way, I was told not to report to work but got paid anyway.

Except for a brief period where I had to come in to get some payroll checks processed, it was great.

That said, I do personally know several who were impacted. Then again, I live in the DC area and probably most people on this board do not. So I wouldn't look to this board as a representative sample.

I suspect that what convinced Republicans to give in to a CR was not just the increasing threat to air traffic control, but also that payments for various aid programs were scheduled to shut off before long. This shutdown went on for nearly as long as possible before the entire nation would have sat up and taken notice.

Next day availability for a US treasury check.

Certain federal programs can't order stuff right now, but a US Treasury check is legally every bit as good as cash in hand.

The only reason for a one-day delay is for overnight batch processing and such.

Custom shoes are indeed worth it IMHO.

But insist on Goretex so that they're waterproof.

She may have bad guidance from her manager.

The shutdown prevents agencies from obligating (i.e. promising to pay) money for new business. But if you have the check in hand, it's good.

Example: You have a deal with a federal agency where they sign a contract to buy a desk from you. The shutdown hits the very next day. You're still getting paid for that desk because you already have a signed contract. But you will not be able to sell a chair to go with it until the shutdown is over.

Source: I do financial management support for one of the larger federal agencies and have been working in this field for 20 years.

re: Is the market a must?

First off, bear in mind that most of your company's growth has happened during a time with very low interest rates to stimulate the economy. A construction business is very well placed to take advantage of that. You got into this at just the right time, and in Nashville to boot.

But the pendulum swings both ways, and one fine day your sales pipeline will dry up. This is where investing in public securities can help.

Notice I didn't say "the market", because there isn't just one. You can invest in bonds of varying maturities, for example. Or Europe. Or Asia. Government bonds of whatever government you like. Or whatever. Investing in public markets gives you the ability to set aside wealth and weather a storm if your order book suddenly dries up.

Don't worry about that, you'd forget before too long.

No surprise there.

A man is on a cruise ship and disaster strikes. The ship sinks and he manages to swim to an island nearby. He sets up shop awaiting rescue.

Before long he finds a woman. Not just any woman, it's (insert your favorite famous beauty queen here - Angelina Jolie will do here). For real. She barely made it but it looks like it's just the two of them for awhile.

The man immediately gets to work building shelter, hunting and fishing, doing whatever it takes to survive. At first she gives him the cold shoulder since he's a peon and she's a famous celebrity. But as the months go by and it's still just the two of them, one stormy night when they're both cowering in a cozy but sturdy shelter they fall for each other anyway.

Six months go by, and they've been doing the deed nearly every day.

Then the day finally comes. She notices something is wrong and asks him about it. He says "Well, it's nothing really."

"No, please tell me! It's really bothering me if something is a problem between us!" she says.

He pauses. "Okay. Fold up all your hair underneath this hat so I can't see any of it." She's puzzled, but complies.

"Now wear this shapeless cloth so I can't tell you're a woman." She's really puzzled now, but whatever.

"Now turn around and start walking down the beach away from me!"

Sobbing, she starts that lonely walk. Thinking about how she had wanted to introduce him to the world as the man who'd saved her, instead of just another Hollywood fake. And what went wrong???

Suddenly she hears footsteps pounding up behind her. He grabs her, whirls her around, and says "DUDE! You wouldn't BELIEVE who I've been schtupping the past six months!"
When you say you have money with a particular firm, what do you mean exactly?

If you have all your money in Schwab accounts, but invested in non-Schwab funds, then do you really have any "brokerage risk"?

All Schwab is doing in this scenario is being a middleman. If you own a Vanguard fund, a PIMCO fund, and a Schwab fund, all within your Schwab account, then you're already diversified with respect to firm.
