I've been to some pretty out in thr middle of no where games and always seen an ambulance on scene, if there really wasn't one there shame on them.

Probably a safer airway than trying to intubate and having to manipulate the neck to get the trach in, considering the likely injury.

My son began playing in 1st grade and played until his last game in the Red Stick Army Bowl in 2017. He played defensive tackle and this was ALWAYS my biggest fear. One of the scariest times for me was a game against Durchtown his Sr year. He was going for 2 guys... he took one guy down and while going down he grabbed the other guys legs. As he went down his helmet flew off and he’s laying on his back while still holding on to that guy around his ankle. I did not take a single breath until my son got his helmet back on.
Dangers happen very young also. He was on B team I believe (9/10 yrs old?) and during practice one night we saw a scramble of people to an area on the field. I knew my son was in it & couldn’t see him. Finally a kid came up. The poor kid was covered in blood and my son was just standing there in shock. I saw the coach going get my son and he hugged him while patting his back. When he tackled that boy both of his two permanent front teeth fflew out.
We also had a kid get permanently injured while playing with friends at home. I’ll have to ask him but I think he was paralyzed. He was in his wheelchair and honored at one of the games. During high school there were 2 kids who suffered paralysis (One was a kid from the Northshore I believe) but all you could do is teach them proper techniques and pray for all their safety on that field. Every parent of a player has this horrible fear so these tragedies really tug at my heart and I can’t imagine what his family and teammates are enduring right now. Prayers to all. ;(

Worst the doc was expecting was a torn acl. He did a trach.
I thought you were about to be a smart arse and try to be funny. I was about to call you a name or two. Glad I was wrong.

No ambulance at game?
Every game in every bootleg texas or La town I’ve been to has an ambulance there.
Normally one at all games in MS as well but they do get called away from time to time just like everywhere else in small town USA.

I had a bad injury in junior football years ago and got a ride. That was in a rural town of 1500 people 15 years or so ago

I’m guessing a significant spinal injury, probably above C4, C5 (innervantes the diaphragm and hence breathing, so essentially he was unable to breathe on his own). He probably sustained the injury tackling with his head down (neck hyperflexion injury). Kids usually code from hypoxia, which means someone didn’t secure the airway (or use bag mask ventilation) fast enough. Tracheotomy on the field makes no sense unless, again, there was an issue securing an airway. This is all speculation since I have no actual details about what happened.

My little town is much smaller than either of these and we have two ambulances.

Man, that is terrible...I would bet both of those teams will struggle to play for the rest of this year...

I played sports all my life until the joints in my body told me hell no i’m not doing this anymore. My kid played sports until he got out of high school. Their is nothing better than watching your children and their friends play sports. Even when they suck. As a parent you always have in the back of your mind that something terrible could happen. Luckily he never got hurt seriously. The reason it bothered me so much is because when I was in high school I was carted off on a backboard with my body immobilized. When you have doctors leaning over you while you are strapped to a board saying it could possibly be something in the C3 or C4 area and you can’t move any part of your body it scares the shite out of you. As a high school player you have no idea what they are talking about. Luckily for me after many hours at the hospital they determined it was just a bad stinger. That’s what they called it back in the 70’s. I am going to pray for this kid because it doesn’t sound good but I can relate a little bit to what may have been going through his head. Please pray for this young man

And if one is doing a transport while an accident happens somewhere else they will leave any sporting event they are standing by at, it happens from time to time everywhere but especially in small towns.

When my buddy broke his neck, they said he was lucky to be breathing. I'm guessing the break might've been that high up.
Eta: He rode in an ambulance to the interstate where a helicopter landed (on the interstate), and brought him to a hospital better suited to deal with that than the regular hospital we were closest to

Whoever did the cricothyrotomy.... probably their first one.
That's one procedure that I want the closest doctor, not the best one, performing.

No news on Twitter yet, the school is supposed to have an update at some point today
IIRC they are also doing a prayer vigil
